The opening sequence of Game of Thrones is a real masterpiece, and for years now, I’ve wished the astrolabe were a real thing. Guess what? It is real, and you can own it.
Sideshow Collectibles and Insight Collectibles has this wonderful rendition of the astrolabe that stands over 13-inches tall and has moving parts to simulate the motion seen in the show open.
Each ring is ornamented with fine details, such as the sigils of the Great Houses of Westeros, and the center ring is engraved with intricate symbology, revealing the history of both Westeros and Essos that is glimpsed at the start of each show.
The astrolabe itself is supported by a stand adorned with the animals that represent the sigils associated with the four Great Houses of Westeros: a direwolf for House Stark, a lion for House Lannister, a stag for House Baratheon, and a dragon for House Targaryen. Each is finely crafted and highly detailed, from the direwolf’s coat to the dragon’s talons. The astrolabe’s weathered finish makes it look and feel like an object from the world of Game of Thrones.
If you have a study, or Nerd Room of Doom that needs a nice conversation piece, the Game of Thrones Astrolabe will fill that niche. It does have a $495 price tag, but for someone who will one day sit on the Iron Throne, that’s really not that much.
