For a while, around the turn of the century, the wrestlers of ‘Attitude Era’ WWE (Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Chyna and others) had their own comic book series from Chaos! Comics.  The quality of the books varied (Undertaker’s was a pretty wild ride, casting him as a literal lord of the underworld enmeshed in an ongoing war for the souls of the dead) but the synergy of the thing was well-timed, given the popularity of wrestling circa 1999.  Indeed, the excitement about those books was (temporarily) high, just as it was about Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 8, the Alex Ross Battle Of The Planets some years ago, and the recent Jem And The Holograms run from IDW, leading us to today’s hand-illustrated query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) has always thought there was potential in a comic-book version of the ‘Grand Theft Auto’ franchise, especially given the number of characters and settings that world has accumulated, asking: Which of your favorite stories and/or properties has the most potential for comic adaptation in your mind?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture!

That WWE comics run reminded me: Manga about New Japan Pro Wrestling! That would be fantastic and people like Shinsuke Nakamura (yeah, hes in WWE now), Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada, Tomohiro Ishii, Tetsuya Naito and Kenny Omega are perfect material for over the top action and drama for manga adaptation.

The old Fox and Sci-Fi Channel series “Sliders” would be fun to see as a comic continuation or reboot. A comic would allow even greater differences in the Earths they visit that they may not have done in the TV series due to budget constraints.

I also think it would be ideal if they made a Power Rangers comic that used pre Zyuranger teams instead of teams from the current or recent series. They could really let loose and make stories of Rangers from other worlds, explore the origins of some of the Ranger powers seen in “Super Megaforce” and even expand the mythology of the franchise without having to stay confined to the Saban budget and available Super Sentai footage.
