One thing I’ve learned recently (mostly from watching Supergirl and The Flash this last season) is the surprising fact that there is still room for sweetness and sentiment in superhero action tales.  After years of the dark and gritty, getting quiet sister-bonding moments or silly Cisco/Barry nerd banter along with the melodrama and the fighty-fighty is very satisfying to me.  Indeed, some of my favorite memories of comic books past are cute ones: Booster and Beetle’s scheming; The X-Men’s summer softball games; the existence of the Super-Sons, leading to today’s ‘leave-your-cynicism-at-the-door’ query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) still finds the part where Starr and Laddie embrace after the vampocalypse at the end of ‘The Lost Boys’ incredibly sweet, asking: What’s the most adorably cute moment in all of pop culture in your eyes?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture!

Its hard to say, but one thing I’m sure of is that it doesn’t include any humans. Animals are way cuter.

Tara and Willow walking along and holding hands in Once More With Feeling. There’s a pretty terrible revelation for the two at the end of the episode, but I still think of that scene and just….. d’awwwww

I have to say, I’m very happy to see things moving out of the dark-and-gritty phase. My batman was the TAS batman, and while it wasn’t bright and cheery, it certainly wasn’t the miserable things we see from DC and Warner Brothers now. The Flash is a very good direction, I think. I hope to see more fun stuff like that and what Marvel’s doing in its movies.

As far as cute… well, I’m a bigger consumer of eastern media than western, but I don’t really have one solid instance in mind – especially with the moe boom still going strong. It’s hard to single stuff out when “cute” the in-style thing to do, so it all kind of blends together for the most part. So that aspect of my media consumption’s kind of moot.

The most I can say is from gaming, actually – Undertale had a lot of cute moments, and while not traditionally cute, they did essentially prevent me from progressing towards one of the game’s endings. The characters and situations in that game are often cute and endearing, and though I’m more of a cat person myself, Lesser and Greater Dog, as well as Papyrus, I found incredibly charming.
