It was only a matter of time before Steve Rogers returned to the role of Captain America. Today, Marvel announced the upcoming release of Captain America: Steve Rogers by Nick Spencer and Jesus Saiz.
In addition to whatever returns Steve Rogers to his younger self (Secret Wars?), Captain America, the Sentinel of Liberty, will also have a new shield.
“It’s an exciting time to be writing Captain America, for sure– this year is the character’s 75th Anniversary, not to mention the upcoming release of Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. And with CIVIL WAR II approaching in the Marvel Universe, it felt like the perfect time to restore Steve Rogers to his former self,” says series writer Nick Spencer.
If you are worried about the fate of Sam Wilson as Captain America, don’t worry, there are now TWO Captain Americas running around.
“CAPTAIN AMERICA: STEVE ROGERS and CAPTAIN AMERICA: SAM WILSON will act as great counter-points to one another,” continues Spencer. “If you’re digging the topical, ripped-from-the-headlines approach we’re taking in Sam’s book, we’ve got plenty more of that to come. And if you’re up for a more timeless take, with Captain America facing off against Hydra and his classic rogues gallery, Steve’s book will be just the thing for you.”
With Captain America: Civil War landing in theaters soon, having Steve Rogers back as Captain America was inevitable, so let’s go with the flow, for now, and see what happens. Or don’t. Use the comment section below to share your thoughts on this all-new all-different direction for Captain America.

Am I the only one who thinks that looks an awful lot like Ultimate Cap?
I wish they did new shield thing with Sam from the start but oh well, I’m happy Steve is Cap gain.
Jesus is in charge of the art? It must be perfect.
When did the little wings on his helmet disappear?
Ugh, it’s like they want to have their cake and eat it too.
I knew it was coming, but I didn’t want to believe it. I want my heroes to evolve, and Captain America as the literal grandfather of the Marvel Universe seemed like a good way to go.
Looks like yet another step in making the comics approach the movies.
I keep expecting the character to be retired – he has become too much of a cult leader already, and has been that way for the longest time – but I don’t think that will happen anytime soon
I must admit that I am disappointed to see Rogers as cap once again. I liked the transition from Rogers to Wilson and bought into the change. Now they bring Rogers back. And for what? The worst part of all this is that I was reluctant when I heard that Rogers was retiring and handing over the shield to Sam Wilson. Finally I bought into the concept and have enjoyed the diversity and evolution of a new captain america. I know they haven’t cancelled Sam Wilson, yet, but I can’t help myself from looking over my shoulder anticipating Marvel pulling the plug entirely on Wilson. That will be a sad day for me.
what’s with all the pouches on his belt and gloves? have you ever seen ANY character pull ANYTHING out of any of those damn pouches except for batman?
Off the top of my head?
Deadpool.
