When the holochess set made its return appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (minor spoilers), Tested was there to talk with Phil Tippett and his team on how they brought the scene to life.

The big thing that is missing from this video, is a discussion on how the puppets were rebuilt from the originals that had essentially decomposed since 1977.

I love this behind the scenes stuff. Even though the topic is covered in broad strokes, there’s enough information here that someone who wants to start playing with stop motion animation can use to get started.
