  1. Thank you Matthew for pointing out that the boycott Star Wars thing was started by trolls.

    Like the #BaldforBieber thing a couple years back and every single Onion article ever, there were some people who took it seriously on both sides of the issue and you had some media outlets start reporting it as a serious story and a few idiot racists thinking their views were being supported because of an echo chamber.

    Is there some way to teach society not to feed the trolls?

      • I think it is more an issue with most media outlets not having any real fact checking. Everyone wants to be one of the first to report something, and as such they report untrue stories or run with things that haven’t actually been researched. Stories about prejudice get a lot of clicks, so even if it is 100 people out of the millions on Twitter making stupid comments, they can report on them and get all those sweet views. This of course creates an unrealistic confirmation bias for those racists that were originally quiet, and then they crawl out from under their rocks and spew their vitriol when they wouldn’t have before.
