When you mention the Dungeons and Dragons movie, most fans will shutter in fear of what has come before. When fans mention the second Dungeons and Dragons movie, you are likely be chased out of town by and angry mob. So… are you ready for another Dungeons and Dragons movie?
Warner Bros. and Hasbro made the announcement today, that is sure to stun a number of fans, and maybe give hope to a new generation of fans wanting to see a D&D movie.
“We are so excited about bringing the world of Dungeons & Dragons to life on the big screen,” said Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. “This is far and away the most well-known brand in fantasy, which is the genre that drives the most passionate film followings. D&D has endless creative possibilities, giving our filmmakers immense opportunities to delight and thrill both fans and moviegoers new to the property.”
The news of the movie comes on the heals of the resolution of the lawsuit between Hasbro and Sweetpea Entertainment that happened in May 2013.
“We are thrilled that this beloved property can finally make its way to the big screen after 20 years, and that it can be realized by Warner Bros., which has been responsible for the biggest fantasy franchises over the past two decades,” said Courtney Solomon of Sweetpea Entertainment.
Solomon and Zeman will be attached to produce all Warner Bros.-produced Dungeons & Dragons film and television productions.

Well.. If done right it has the potential to be great. I mean many of the D&D Books are well liked amount fans. So if they can capture the essence of a D&D party then am all in.. But then again isn’t every fantasy movie also a d&d movie? I know i play alot of D&D but I can’t help but think of new character or story line for campaigns when i watch movies. So if they can just make a good fantasy movie then yay!!
If weapons and armor dont look like plastic LARP props I’m already positively surprised.
I actually enjoyed the second D&D film. It wasn’t the best, but the story and characters were a LOT closer to a D&D feel than the first and third films. If it had been made on a Hollywood budget rather than a made-for-TV or direct-to-DVD budget (for effects and such) it would have been better, but for what it was, it wasn’t that bad.
But I’m going to be cautiously awaiting this. I’ve been hoping we’d see some good D&D movies, and I’m not willing to let the track record get me down. My only other wish other than “let it be good” is “can we get a couple of lovely Drow ladies?”.
The first clue as to whether it will ACTUALLY be a D&D movie is whether the Director & lead writers have been D&D players. If not, it will not turn out to be a D&D in anything but name.
So the only person qualified to direct a James Bond movie is a British spy? Or the only person qualified to direct Star Wars is a Jedi knight? I see your line of thinking, but you may want to rework your argument.
No, no, the only people allowed to direct Star Wars movies are protocol droids and astromechs, since the movies are CLEARLY the story of R2 and 3PO. The Jedi/Sith/Imperial/Rebel/Republic/Separatist stories are all secondary.
Chris Perkin’s couldn’t reveal much on twitter but said that had been lot of interesting meetings.. So if Chris or any of the Wizard folks is involved with the story then you get some of what you are wishing for :)
Animated? I really don’t have high hopes for live action.
