During our weekly scheduled podcasting session this week, there was a rare but enjoyable bout of short-attention span theatre, during which our four-way conversation somehow came to land on amusement parks and more specifically, roller coasters. Not surprisingly, Young Zach professed to be all about the thrill-ride, while the rest of us seemed to have varying degrees of excitement commensurate with our ages and general body mass. As a younger man, I didn’t mind a roller coaster ride (the Zambezi Zinger was a fave-rave), but these days, it would have to be one really comfortable ride. Like, if they retrofit the Timber Wolf with some nice leather seats, maybe a decent sound system, and maybe it were also a frozen yogurt shop, which leads us to today’s Kamikaze Curve query…
The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) is more of a “wide-bench seat on the slow-moving carousel” type these days, but once had a wild side for the big ‘coasters, asking: Roller Coaster: Hooray or No Way?

Despite the fact that I really shouldn’t have rode them (what with my bad heart and other issues), I used to love coasters and would jump at the chance to ride them. When the Batman coaster first opened up at Six Flags Great America (the one near Chicago), my childhood best friend and I spent a few weekends up there riding just that (long waits, but worth it!).
But now that I’m older (mid 30’s) as well as being on stronger medications, I just can’t enjoy them the way I used to. It breaks my heart since I still want to ride them, but with a few exceptions, I end up pretty badly sick to my stomach if I ride them anymore due to my medications playing havoc on my stomach even without what the coaster does to it.
So technically both. I love them, but my stomach doesn’t.
Long time ago, big hooray. Now, when Im in mid 30´s, NO F*****G way! Too much common sense, and waay too much afraid of heights. I would get in one, but it would have to be a very unusual situation.
The weird thing is I have a crippling fear of heights, but for some reason it didn’t bother me on coasters. Stand on a ladder? I scream and cry. Riding a coaster at a height higher than a large house? WHEEEEEEEEEE!
Maybe unless there are loops in which case nope. I’ll see you all at the tilt-a-whirl.
Roller Coaster = Hooray. I am not an adrenaline junkie but make it go faster!!
Nope. If I wanted to hear the sounds of people screaming while I am in a car whirling around and upside down, I would just ride with my grandmother….
I was never a fan of coaster (I’d ride them, just never really got that excited) but now that my kid, ages 7, 7, and just shy of 4, are strating to ride them, I find it fun to ride and experience with them.
