I know many of you were hoping to see the continuing adventures of Tron, but Disney has decided you can’t. Nothing personal, right?
Olivia Wilde, Garret Hedlund and director Joseph Kosinski were all schedule to return to the third film in the Tron franchice.
Prep had been started on the third film, and production was looking to shoot this fall, likely in Vancouver, British Columbia. Disney had been interested in adding Jared Leto to the cast, but an offer and negotiations had never commenced.
No one seems to have a reason why the film has been cancelled, but Disney stated Tron 3 was never officially greenlit. Perhaps Tron didn’t have the fan base that Star Wars and Marvel Studios have right now, or perhaps a change in leadership shut down the deal. Perhaps it was the fact that Tron Legacy only made $400 million against a $170 million budget. In a day and age where the cost of promotion is as much or more than the movie production, a potential profit of only $60 million may have been enough to cause the House of Mouse to pass.

That’s a shame. I really enjoyed that franchise. If you watch the second movie in 2D instead of the terribly tacked on 3D, it’s much more enjoyable. Hopefully Disney will reconsider in a year or two.
That’s a real shame. It wasn’t the best story but it was really a real spectacle. And I was really interested in what repercussions of Olivia Wilde’s character being in the real world would have.
BOO!!!
This saddens me. I was looking forward to what could happen next.
To kickstarter!
Just give it about 15 to 20 years or so like we did for the first sequel.
I can’t say I’m disappointed, but at the same time I hope this doesn’t mean the end of the franchise either. I’d love to see them simply shift the focus from film to some other medium, like maybe a web series (which seems fitting with the computer aspect of the setting).
Aww I seem to recall liking Tron 2: The Cyber-Lebowski.
Such is life.
