One important side effect of my days in radio comes in being exposed to wider variety of music than at any other time of my life, especially songs that ended up in the regular rotation that I really didn’t care for.  (I’m looking at you, “Ya Gotta Be.”)  This also means that I know lyrics that I don’t even realize I’ve heard, which makes the child think that I’m a pop music wizard, and have musical favorites from multiple decades and genres.  Still, being an old dude, sometimes people are surprised that I’m aware of the new musical hotness, like that month where I couldn’t get that godforsaken ‘Royals’ song out of my head.  The greatest amount of shock came at my previous job, where several of my twenty-something coworkers were somehow amazed by my knowledge of Sir Mix-A-Lot’s back catalogue, which leads us to today’s musical query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) has to admit that Ariana Grande’s latest album wasn’t half-bad, though she’s still a bit to impressed with her vocal range, asking: Which of your musical favorites do you think people would find most surprising?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

  1. A lot of people seem genuinely surprised that I enjoy classical music (which, for some reason, many people have assumed I meant “classic rock” when I say classical).

Also, foreign pop music. I hate pretty much the vast majority of English pop music, and my friends know this. Yet for some reason I cannot understand, I do enjoy non-English pop (such as Alizée or Aya Matsuura). I’ve had people over helping me out due to my disability and have music playing, mostly hard rock and metal, and when one of the foreign pop songs come on most people freeze and give me this look like I’ve just grown three more eyes and seven horns.

Most of the people who know me would be surprised that I like many Michael Jackson songs a lot. My closest friends who I spend lots of time with would know it but when I was younger I was a big fan of metal and especially Nordic black/death metal and I also looked like it, so thats kinda how people who knew me from that time remember me from.
