If I understand my memes correctly (and given that I’m forty-something with a tendency to only half-listen to things I don’t really understand, so there’s no guarantee of that), today is known on social media as “Woman Crush Wednesday”, wherein one reveals one’s pop culture crushes. As one who treats my multiple platonic fancies like my Monster Rehab (as many as possible, with at least one per day if I’m going to stay happy) I’ve come to realize that I don’t have a ‘type’. Pretty much anybody can make the list, based on a number of factors, but the only real commonality is that something about them makes me happy. Of course, that doesn’t stop folks like Chris Wilson mocking me (She LOOKS LIKE Starfire, CHRIS!), and also leads us to today’s #WCW query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) should probably admit that I have trouble resisting a woman in “smart girl” glasses, asking: Is there any common theme to your pop culture crush (or crushes)?

Matthew Peterson

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture!

And a nice red uniform.

Seems like a good percentage of them are read heads. I think first one I could call actual crush is Willow from Buffy. I always though her much hotter than Buffy or any other girl in that series.

Other than being female, I don’t have a single overall trait across my crushes, but there are some clusters of types that I do find myself drawn to more than others.

First and foremost are women of Asian descent in general, which are probably the largest chunk of my pop culture crushes. From the many female heroes of Super Sentai (and even a few from Power Rangers such as Thuy Trang, Erika Fong and Christina Masterson) to the lovely ladies that might be more commonly known to US/English speaking countries (such as Ming-Na Wen and Grace Park to name a couple). I can’t help it, they are all gorgeous!

I also have a thing for characters that are, for lack of a better term, non-human (such as humanoid aliens and the like). The Orion ladies of Star Trek, Trance Gemini of “Andromeda”, Aayla Secura (and other Twi’leks) of Star Wars and so on. Heck, as a kid I even had a crush on one of the ladies from “Alien Nation”.

And of course, redheads such as Felicia Day, Lindy Booth and Dina Meyer.

I’d have to go with Kristen Bell. Ever since Veronica Mars I’ve loved her and she’s certainly one of my “types”. I also love Rachel Lee Cook, especially from Josie and the Pussycats (extremely underrated movie) but I don’t know if she even exists anymore.
I apologize to Matthew. She does look like Starfire…if George Perez drew her. :) We all know that Starfire doesn’t exist and the New 52 one is the best one :D
God Matthew hates me. I’m going to get so fired.

Matthew doesn’t have the authority to hire or fire anyone :)

I am, however, authorized to deliver my “Fangs of Fury” combination powerbomb without reprisal…

So I got that goin’ for me.

        Which is nice, y’know…

Didn’t you get the memo? Budget cuts mean your Fangs have been reduced to Cuddly Hugs of Happiness in the new budget yet.

For my celebrity crushes I have a tendency to gravitate towards women with an over-the top colorful stye, such as Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Kelly Osbourne, and one of my first celebrity crushes ever was Cindy Lauper.
As far as women in general, I have a preference for redheads with fair skin, long legs, and a pixie-ish smile, which is why I feel like the most beautiful female celebrity in the world is supermodel Cintia Dicker.
I’ve also recently discovered that I have a thing for silent film era actresses. I could look at pictures of Clara Bow, Louise Brooks, Lillian Gish, Brigitte Helm, and Fay Wray all day long. I think I have done that, actually.
