The AMC Walking Dead spinoff series is really cranking up as it moves to production, announcing its female lead.
Kim Dickens who you may remember from her great performance as Detective Rhonda Boney from David Fincher’s “Gone Girl” has been hired to play the lead female role in the series. Already announced is Cliff Curtis as the male lead in a series that takes place at the same time as the current Walking Dead events play out.
Dickens is believed to be playing guidance counselor Nancy Tompkins: “A thirtysomething single mom to two kids, Nancy looks like the girl next door, but there’s an edge to her.” Frank Dillane and Alycia Debnam Carey were previously announced and are set to play Nancy’s children — Nick, Nancy’s screwed up teenage son who is too old to stay home, but too scared to flee; and Ashley, Nancy’s mostly level-headed teenage daughter, whose ambition is in direct proportion to her older brother’s failures. AMC declined to confirm character details.
It will be interesting to see if the spin-off series focuses on the characters who showed up in the comic who came from “the west” with the cure to the plague. Those characters mostly died over the course of the arc (spoiler alert), but it would tie back to the comic if the creators spun it that way. Of course with AMC betting a large portion of their ratings on “The Walking Dead” having a spin-off zombie series that they own completely could be an even better move for the cable channel down the road.

This is great news. I already liked the male lead of Cliff Curtis, and now this, I’m pretty stoked for this even more. Though I haven’t seen ‘Gone Girl’ yet, I have read the book and can not wait to see the movie. Kim Dickens has been great in everything I’ve seen her in (the first being ‘Deadwood’), plus, she’s very attractive. Win, win!
