As ‘The Simpsons’ officially enters its second quarter-century, it’s once again showing up on my pop-culture radar, thanks to the crossovers with ‘Family Guy’ and ‘Futurama’, two shows that I have actually been watching these last couple of years.  There’s a tendency to declare EVERY season of The Simpsons since about 1994 the “WORST season EVER”, but I have been finding some great amusement in Season 26 nonetheless.  Here at the MS-QOTD, we don’t deal in negativity, and ruminations about whether a show is as good as it used to be does bring up the memories of what is used to be, which brings us to today’s “Cowabunga” query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) finds it suspect how many people claim not to watch the show anymore and can still poke fun at the most recent seasons, asking: What’s the best Simpsons moment of all time?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture!

And a nice red uniform.

From the first eight seasons or so there are a ton of great moments. There are a few bits that stick in my mind, like the entirety of the Frank Grimes episode, and the “Gas, break, honk. Gas, break, honk. Honk, honk, punch, gas, gas, gas.”

My favorite “cool” moment is the Flying/Fighting Hellfish episode, where Grampa first saves Bart from drowning in a locked chest, and then proceeds to harpoon Burns’ boat, and follow him using nothing but his slippers for water skis.

I’m rather fond of Ralph Wiggum’s parts.
    “I bent my wookiee”
    “I’m a Star Wars!”
    “Hi Super Nintendo Chalmers!”
“Thats where I saw the Leprechaun. He tells me to burn things”
And my personal favorite, said just after Marge touches his shoulder:
“Help! Shes touching my special area!”

I was a high school English teacher. I had one class full of Simpsons fans. Whenever one made a bad grade, another kid would say “Him fail English? That’s unpossible!”
      Thanks, Ralph!

We also really dug the parody of The Raven.
