As a longtime fan of the Green Hornet, I was less-than-pleased with the 2011 Seth Rogen comedy take on the character.  Though it had some cool bro-ings on featuring Rogen and Jay Chou (including the truly wonderful line “Dude…  Dude, you’re speaking Chinese right now”), it didn’t really do justice to the Hornet.  (Kato, on the other hand, was pretty awesome throughout.)  Since it’s been nearly three years, and we’re dealing with what’s technically a superhero property, I think it’s high time that someone brought back the other dynamic duo in more serious fashion, perhaps even taking on the generational aspects seen in the old Now Comics take on the character, with an older Hornet (as played by Val Kilmer) handing off the role to his nephew (played by a Dave Franco, maybe) with Nan Yu as Hayashi Kato’s younger sister, Mishi.  Of course, my call isn’t always the will of the public, which leads us to today’s casting query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) figures that, since they’re going to reboot things constantly, we might as well get a leg up on the next one, asking: Who should play The Green Hornet and Kato in my hypothetical reboot film?

Simon Pegg as Green Hornet and Tony Jaa as Kato. Great action comedy guy and best martial artist actor at the moment, good mix.

It doesn’t matter who the cast in the roles if they don’t have a script that takes the source material seriously. The problem with the Wild Wild West Movie, the two Lone Ranger Movies, and most other TV show movies is that they don’t respect the material and tried to turn a drama show into a comedy. If I had to pick, I’d suggest Chris Pine for the Green Hornet and John Cho as Kato. But, having watched The Green Hornet during its original broadcast back in the sixties, I’d be happier if they’d just let the franchise fade away. It wasn’t a good as people remember.

i always really enjoyed the 90’s internet rumor that the roles would’ve been reversed in a cinematic reboot, with an asian-american Hornet, and a white Kato. in the 90’s i would’ve said Jet Li as the Hornet, and George Clooney as Kato. But currently, I’ll say Joe Taslim from The Raid as the Hornet, and maybe…i don’t know. Chris Pratt as Kato?

I’d actually like to see that. An older Kato taking over the role of Green Hornet and training a new Kato…
