IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY!
But what to read?
Fortunately, the Major Spoilers Staff have comic book recommendations for you!
AVENGERS AND X-MEN AXIS #2
Writer: Rick Remender
Artist: Jim Cheung
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: ACT I: THE RED SUPREMACY • The heroes of the Marvel Universe storm the beaches of Red Skull’s Genoshian Reeducation camps. What they discover within will lead to a bleak new era. • The revelation of Tony Stark’s dark secret promises to shatter the fragile alliance between A and X. • The all-new Captain America pays a terrible price. • Nova’s attempt at solving the crisis leads to disaster. • Magneto betrays his alliance to join an army of evil
ROB: Picked the first book up on a whim (Mostly the terrifying idea of Red Onslaught got me) and it turned out better than expected. Issue two promises to kick up the betrayal aspect after last issues reunions, so we’ll see where we get to go from here.
BATMAN AND ROBIN #35
Writer: Peter J. Tomasi
Artist: Patrick Gleason, Mick Gray
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “’Robin Rises’ continues as Batman begins his trek to Apokolips to recover his son’s body. But will he walk alone?”
WAYNE: It’s the last thing I expected, to want to see Damian Wayne return as Robin. But he’s grown on me as a character, and I have to see what the good folks at DC, particularly Mr. Tomasi, have in mind for him. Can’t wait!
DEADLY CLASS #8
Writer: Remender, Rick
Artist: Craig, Wesley
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: Kings Dominion School of the Deadly Arts is about to get some competition, as everyone’s favorite animal-loving scar-faced maniac is opening a little murder-academy of his own. And look, he’s brought some friends!
ASHLEY: More violence! More school! More assassins!
DOCTOR WHO 12TH #1
Writer: Robbie Morrison
Artist: Dave Taylor
Publisher: Titan Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Clara thought she was in for an evening of marking essays on the Metaphysical Poets, followed by going out on a date – or at least trying to. You know, normal stuff. Instead, she’s facing down exotic flora and fauna in her best dress, backing up the Doctor on a trek through traumatically alien undergrowth – and she doesn’t even know what the Doctor is searching for, or what will try to kill them should they find it!
MATTHEW: The Twelfth Doctor is an odd duck in the new series of Doctor Who, and I really like his weird alien nature. Since I’m already reading about Ten and Eleven, one more Doctor Who series won’t hurt. Hell, I’d buy Twelve each month if they existed and were good…
EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #5
Writer: Gerard Way
Artist: Jake Wyatt
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: What or who is SP//dr? Gerard Way (Umbrella Academy) makes his Marvel debut with Jake Wyatt (Ms. Marvel, Indestructible Hulk) establishing a new universe and the incredible Spider character who inhabits it!
GEORGE: I’ve been picking and choosing when it comes to these Edge of Spider-Verse series (that $3.99 price point is foreboding, Marvel). This one definitely piques my interest. Gerard Way is an interesting talent. I’m curious to see what he’ll do on a Big 2 book. And that Jake Wyatt cover makes me salivate in all its mecha-looking goodness.
ROB: Spider-Verse looks interesting, and most of the newly introduced Spiders have been awesome. Now we get one from Gerard Way and I think it looks to be the most interesting yet.
GAME OF THRONES: CERSEI BARATHEON
Price: $24.99
SOLICITATION: The wife of King Robert and queen of Westeros.
Dark Horse has rocked the collectibles world with its series of stunning Game of Thrones figures. Sculpted and painted with painstaking detail, these 7–8 inch figures capture the character of the show and the likenesses of the HBO series cast.
RODRIGO: I’ve been meaning to get something to stand next to my Judge Dredd action figure… Think about it… Yeah, you get it.
JUSTICE LEAGUE #35
Writer: Geoff Johns
Artist: Ivan Reis, Joe Prado
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “’The Amazo Virus’ begins here! Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor join Wayne Enterprises and LexCorp – but why? And then, it’s HUMAN VS. SUPER-HUMAN when a dangerous and bizarre virus is unleashed upon the Justice League – but what exactly is the Amazo Virus? Who unleashed it and why? And what unforeseen effects will it have on the greatest heroes of the DC Universe? Plus, Batman and the League uncover Lex’s most guarded secret at LexCorp Headquarters.”
WAYNE: I continue to enjoy Mr. Johns’ work on Justice League, and probably always will. I like the idea of a virus instead of a robot for Amazo, so I’m ready for this issue to get here, already!
LEGEND OF KORRA PIN SET
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $5.99
SOLICITATION: The Legend of Korra takes place seventy years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the next Avatar after Aang—a girl named Korra who is from the Southern Water Tribe. With three of the four elements under her belt (earth, water, and fire), Korra seeks to master air.
We have themed our initial product releases to the symbols of these four elements, as designed by show creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko and the Nickelodeon creative team.
RODRIGO: I liked the original elemental representations from Avatar, but I think these are really cool, especially with that color scheme. Besides my new backpack needs more pins!
LUMBERJANES #7
Writer: Ellis, Grace
Artist: Allen, Brooke A.
Publisher: BOOM! Box
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: It’s a race through the woods and through everyones’ favorite cave of doom as the Lumberjanes make their way through previous obstacles. Now they know what answers they’re looking for and they are not going to leave until everything is out in the open. Only it looks like the boys’ camp might have other ideas.
ASHLEY: Lumberjanes is the cutest, best adventure comic out there! I’m really looking forward to learning more about the three-eyed evil creatures, more revelations about Rosie and just how much she knows and hopefully some development of the relationship between Mal and Molly!
MAGNUS ROBOT FIGHTER #7
Writer: Fred Van Lente
Artist: Cory Smith, Sandy Jarrell
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “In this issue: Transmech Catchers. Soft robots. Computers that are guns. Ultraviolet versions of video games that are actually video games because everybody that plays will probably die. Welcome to THE BUTCHER BLOC, from acclaimed creators FRED VAN LENTE (Marvel Zombies, Conan the Avenger) and CORY SMITH (Fathom, TMNT)!”
WAYNE: This book continues to shine to me and proves that classic characters can come back with a vengeance when the right creative team is put on the series. It’s a terrific upgrade to a futuristic character that I couldn’t be happier about! Don’t’ miss it!
MS MARVEL #9
Writer: G. Willow Wilson
Artist: Adrian Alphona
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: As Kamala discovers more about her past, the Inventor threatens her future. Why is Lockjaw really with Kamala? The fan-favorite, critically-acclaimed, amazing new series continues as Kamala proves why she’s the best (and most adorable) new super hero there is!
ASHLEY: This title is one of the best superheroine books on the market right now. Kamala’s growth as a person and a heroine mirror each other nicely and there’s a doggie in this one!
MATTHEW: Kamala Khan’s journey as a young hero has been pretty awesome, and I love me some Lockjaw. Win/Win.
SUPERIOR FOES OF SPIDER-MAN #16
Writer: Nick Spencer
Artist: Steve Lieber
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: • STILL NOT still not canceled!
• GANG WAR rages on at its rageful-iest.
• The Sinister Six versus EVERYONE!
GEORGE: Still not canceled? Still one of Marvel’s funniest and most fun books. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it as long as it’s coming out; enjoy it while it lasts.
TMNT ONGOING #39
Writer: Tom Waltz, Kevin Eastman
Artist: Mateus Santolouco
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The ranks of Hob’s gang are growing, and two other mutants want in… Bebop & Rocksteady!! Will they imperil the Turtles’ wary alliance with Hob? And just what the heck are Don and Harold busy building? Read on to find out!
ROB: So last month’s issue ended with the biggest cliff-hanger I’ve seen in this series, and I am excited to see where it goes. More mutants means more conflicts, and the newest potential addition to Hob’s army may make quite the impact.
TREES #6
Writer: Warren Ellis
Artist: Jason Howard
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Blindhail Station is a research post on Svalbard, in the Arctic Ocean, where observers have been watching a Tree since it landed ten years earlier. Out here, out of sight of the world, something is changing. And it’s going to change everything.
GEORGE: Trees isn’t as experimental as Ellis’ other book this week (Supreme Blue Rose), but it’s still pretty strange. I’m hoping some of the mysteries get cleared up soon, but I’ve been enjoying the ride so far. Ellis is good at creating a sense of creeping dread, and nowhere is that sense of foreboding greater than in the Arctic sections of this series.
TWILIGHT ZONE LOST TALES #1
Writer: Mark Rahner
Artist: Randy Valiente, Rod Rodolfo, Edu Menna
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $7.99
SOLICITATION: Three new tales of the strange and unsettling by Mark Rahner (Twilight Zone Annual, Dejah of Mars)! A former terrorism detainee hunts down the ailing politician who authorized his torture – to deliver a very special gift. Tensions boil over on a space ship whose mission is to terraform a new planet, which happens to be occupied already. A tech mogul tries on his new smart-glasses prototype, and discovers an unexpected feature: he can see people’s souls.
MATTHEW: It’s a little spendy, but I’m interested in seeing a done-in-one TZ tale from IDW, as their issue breaks in the regular series were problematic for me…
WITCHBLADE CASE FILES #1
Writer: Ryan Cady
Artists: Michael Turner, Marc Silvestri, Dale Keown, Stjepan Sejic, David Finch, Laura Braga
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Take a look into the personal files of Sara Pezzini! 19 years and 180 issues of juggling her career as both a law enforcement officer and the Balance of Good and Evil means a whole lot of crooks, ne’er-do-wells, and straight-up monsters, and we’ve got the scoop on the worst of them. Includes a never-before-seen backup story from Talent Hunt runners-up!
RODRIGO: If you’re a witchblade fan, then this is probably going to make you really happy. I’m looking forward to it just to see these many artists take on one subject.
