IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY!
But what to read?
Fortunately, the Major Spoilers Staff have comic book recommendations for you!
BATWOMAN FUTURES END #1
Writer: Marc Andreyko
Artist: Jason Masters
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: 2.99
SOLICITATION: Now a creature of the night, Batwoman turns against her former lover, Nocturna, in final, deadly conflict!
RODRIGO: Bat-characters as vampires are two great tastes that go great together. I also like that DC was like “Who should we get to do this vampire cover? Oh I know, how about that guy that draws that vampire book?”
DEADLY CLASS #7
Writer: Rick Remender
Artist: Wesley Craig
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: CLASS IS BACK IN SESSION AS RICK REMENDER & WES CRAIG’S HIT SERIES ROLLS INTO ITS SECOND ARC!
Narrowly escaping death in Las Vegas, Marcus and his remaining gang return to Kings Dominion High School for the Deadly Arts. But they’re about to learn a hard lesson: blood begets blood, and no bad deed goes unpunished.
GEORGE: I love Deadly Class. It might be my favorite thing that Remender’s done to date, and Wesley Craig is killing it on art. It’s a lot more meaningful than any story about a school for assassins has a right to be. I’m glad this is back, even if it was just a short break.
DEADPOOL BI-ANNUAL #1
Writer: Paul Scheer, Nick Giovannetti
Artist: Salva Espin
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: • When Deadpool is hired by WaterWorld to protect their theme park from activists, he has no idea he’s going to wind up face to snout with Brute Force-protectors of the environment! Look ’em up! That’s right-they’re real!
• Written by star of The League and NTSF:SD:SUV Paul Scheer and Nick Giovannetti, this is one issue sure to make a splash*!
*This joke was not written by them.
Parental Advisory
GEORGE: Two reasons I’m excited for this one. #1, Paul Scheer is a very funny man, and I’d like to see what he can do with Deadpool. #2, dolphin in battle armor.
EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #2
Writer: Jason Latour
Artist: Robbi Rodriguez
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: In one universe, it wasn’t Peter Parker bitten by the radioactive Spider, but Gwen Stacy! She’s smart, charming and can lift a car– Just don’t tell her Police Chief father! How is she involved in Spider-Verse? Seeds of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #9 are planted here!
ROB: Was rather surprised this wasn’t the first issue of the Edge of Spider-Verse series, but I am interested to see what they do with Spider-Gwen, and what happened to the Peter Parker of her universe.
EYE OF NEWT #4
Writer: Michael Hague
Artist: Michael Hague
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Having narrowly survived their quest and its dangers, our heroes appear to have run out of luck when they find themselves trapped with no avenue of escape from the dragon’s attack! It looks like certain death—but rescue comes in a most unexpected form.
RODRIGO: I talked about this one on the show last week. If you want a book that visually harkens back to the 80s then Eye of Newt is for you. Also there’s a cool toad in it.
GEORGE PEREZ’S SIRENS #1
Writer: George Perez
Artist: George Perez
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
S
OLICITATION: “A six-issue mini-series! As an intergalactic force enslaves planets across the galaxy, the legendary team known only as the Sirens must reunite to save the galaxy – but is it even possible when the Sirens themselves don’t even remember who they are? And the rest of the universe only remembers them as … villains?”
WAYNE: Look, Mr. Perez has been my very favorite comic artist for years now. Where he goes, I follow. He draws the female figure like few others can, so this is the perfect work for him. I’ll be there with bells on for sure! You should be, too!
GODZILLA CATACLYSM #2
Writer: Cullen Bunn
Artist: Dave Wachter
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: An angry Godzilla returns to do battle once again! With Biollante and Mothra awakening both fears and hopes in humanity, only Hiroshi has a glimpse at the terrible truth! Will his village survive the monsters terrible onslaught?
MATTHEW: The first issue of this series was impressive work, with my main complaint being one of brevity. Now, the Big G is in play, and I’m interested to see what happens next…
ITTY BITTY BUNNIES RAINBOW PIXIE LAND XMAS #1
Writer: Dean Rankine
Artist: Dean Rankine
Publisher: Action Lab Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Take some time for an adventure to a magical world with two cute bunnies… two foul mouthed, drug using, butt-naked bunnies that go on adorably offensive, insultingly hilarious adventures! Your journey into off-color fun begins here, with this mix of Adventure Time and underground comix!
MATTHEW: I…
…don’t know what this is. But, I’m a little psyched to find out…
THE MULTIVERSITY: THE SOCIETY OF SUPER-HEROES: CONQUERORS OF THE COUNTER-WORLD #1
Writer: Grant Morrison
Artists: Chris Sprouse, Karl Story
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: The biggest adventure in DC Comics history continues!
Grant Morrison joins modern legend Chris Sprouse (TOM STRONG, BATMAN: RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE, ACTION COMICS) for a trip to Earth-20 starring a Society of Super Heroes unlike anything you’ve seen before! It’s pulp Super Hero action with a post-modern twist — you can’t afford to miss it! Who is the demon-like Green Lantern protecting Earth-20? What secret does Doc Fate hold that could save the world? Who are the hand-to-hand and air-to-air combat queens known as the Blackhawks? And what happens when these heroes come face to face with their diabolical Earth-40 counterparts – led by Vandal Savage – for an epic war between parallel worlds? Find out all that and more in this exciting stand-alone issue which also acts as chapter two of the overall MULTIVERSITY storyline. Join us, if you dare, for THE MULTIVERSITY
CHRIS: I thought everybody hated Final Crises but I must be wrong because people are loving Multiversity. The two are definitely related and I don’t know how you could like one and not the other. Grant Morrison had me at the end of the first issue and I’m in for the rest. Making the story continue on in one shots is a strange idea and I hope it doesn’t confuse readers.
RODRIGO: I’m a sucker for alternate reality tales. I think it’s because, like canonical stories, they won’t matter in a couple of months. But unlike canonical stories, no one gets in your face for saying that…
STEPHEN: I have really high hopes for this book, and really hope the entire Multiversity event doesn’t spin off into forced tie-in issues in the normal run of books.
RED CITY #4 of 4
Writer: Daniel Corey
Artist: Mark Dos Santos
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “The case comes to a close and Cal has to resort to extreme measures to save the city.”
WAYNE: This mash-up of sci-fi and crime noir comes to a close, and I love it! Hope we get more of this excellent title from the creator of Moriarty!
SOLAR MAN OF THE ATOM #5
Writer: Frank J. Barbiere
Artist: Jonathan Lau
Cover by: Juan Doe
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “Part 1 of New Story Arc! Ok, so 1) Erica’s got ALL the Solar powers. 2) Erica doesn’t know how to USE the Solar powers. 3) Erica’s dad keeps bugging her about HOW to use the Solar powers. 4) Erica’s lost waaaaaay the hell out in space BECAUSE of the Solar powers, and 5) Pretty much every alien ever wants to catch Erica and STEAL the Solar powers. Things are gonna blow UP. Welcome to the most bats&%t insane lost-in-space story EVER by Frank Barbiere (Five Ghosts) and new artist Jonathan Lau (Codename: Action)!”
WAYNE: And you thought you’d seen everything possible with Solar Man of the Atom! Mr. Barbiere and company are taking things in a new and fascinating direction, so be sure to pick this title up! If you’d like to learn more about this book, listen to my chat with Frank in episode 145 of my Wayne’s Comics Podcast!
SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #33
Writer: Christos Gage
Artist: Giuseppe Camuncoli
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE • The Superior Spider-Man takes the fight to Karn, the man working his way through the multiverse, leaving a trail of dead spiders in his wake, but finds himself hopefully over-powered. • Can Sup’ Spidey find enough allies to make a dent in Karn?
ROB: More Ock as Spidey as we continue to see the periphery of Spider-Man’s influence. I’m just glad to see more of the Superior Spider-Man and wonder how much of this was planned when the day was lost.
THE DELINQUENTS #2
Writer: James Asmus, Fred Van Lente
Artist: Kano
Publisher: Valiant
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Well…that escalated quickly. Quantum and Woody and Archer & Armstrong are riding the rails looking for the lost treasure of the Hobo King. Each armed with one half of a mysterious map, these two tandems have unwittingly been pitted against each other in a four-way free-for-all…but can either team get along long enough to achieve their mission? The world’s worst crossover joyride is about to enter uncharted territory!
CHRIS: My two favorite Valiant titles combined into one. This book is packed with fun and humor, though some of it is low brow, it still hits. I’m dying to find out where the butt-map will take the two teams.
TMNT TURTLES IN TIME #4
Writer: Paul Allor
Artist: Dan Duncan
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Turtles’ time-travelling adventure comes to its epic conclusion in the not-too-distant future! The Turtles are shocked to discover a Manhattan greatly changed from the home they know. Surprising enemies and allies await them, in addition to grave decisions. Will they be able to make it back home AND save the future?
ROB: Turtle hi-jinks throughout time are fun. Well thought story beats showing us how much of the world came to be, that’s just icing on the cake. I’m excited for the issue, but sad to see it come to an end.
WICKED & DIVINE #4
Writer: Keiron Gillen
Artist: Jamie McKelvie
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: The mystery is solved. But does pop-god Lucifer like the answer? The answer is a word that rhymes with ‘Go’, ‘Blow’ and ‘Pro’. If you think the answer rhymes with ‘Cow’ I applaud you for your unconventional nature. It’s good to experiment. We’re experimenting with being Awesome for four issues in a row. JOIN US.
GEORGE: The Wicked and The Divine is about Gillen and McKelvie’s common themes of youth and celebrity, filtered through a lens of music and mythology. It’s been interesting so far, and very pretty to look at.
MATTHEW: Weird book, getting weirder (and better) with each issue. Recommended.
