Press Release
Celebrating the 15th anniversary of the theatrical release of the original motion picture FREE ENTERPRISE, the film’s writer/producer MARK A. ALTMAN (Castle, The Specials, DOA: Dead Or Alive) and director/writer ROBERT MEYER BURNETT (Agent Cody Banks, ST: TMP Blu-rays) announced the launch of a new Kickstarter campaign beginning today to produce a pilot for a new TV series based on the comedic cult classic.
Produced by the original team behind the beloved fan favorite, the new TV series, inspired by FREE ENTERPRISE, like its progenitor is a love letter to STAR TREK and all things geektastic from two lifelong devotees of genre filmmaking and fantastic pop culture.
FREE ENTERPRISE – THE TV SERIES features an all-new cast of characters and a coterie of famous nerdlebrities that they will encounter in their travels. Retaining the wit, fun and genre savvy of the original film, the FREE ENTERPRISE-based TV series, will have you loving long and partying like it’s 1999.
“We are so excited about the opportunity to revisit this universe we first created 15 years ago,” says series producer MARK A. ALTMAN. “We’re looking forward to spreading the word about this campaign during SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON and at the LAS VEGAS CREATION STAR TREK CONVENTION the following week as well and show fans how they can be a part of bringing this project to life.”
While many successful filmmakers have Kickstarted their projects, “Free Enterprise” is the first TV project to raise funds on Kickstarter from established industry professionals.
“This is a chance for us to make our show the way we want to make it,” says producer ROBERT MEYER BURNETT. “We don’t have to answer to a studio or a network, only the fans who will make Kirk-starting this series possible.”
Joining the FREE ENTERPRISE TV SERIES team will be Emmy Award-winning comedy director (and FREE ENTERPRISE fan) DAVID ROGERS, who has worked on such series as SEINFELD, THE OFFICE and is currently a producer and director on Fox’s critically acclaimed THE MINDY PROJECT.
Adds series producer David E. Williams, “For over a decade, fans have demanded a sequel to FREE ENTERPRISE. This is your chance to see the FREE ENTERPRISE universe return to screens… and only YOU can make it so!”
For those who want more information on the FREE ENTERPRISE TV Series Kickstarter campaign, the filmmakers will be making appearances at the GEEK Magazine booth at Comic-Con (Booth #4437) and also participating in a 15th anniversary FREE ENTERPRISE reunion panel, moderated by Access Hollywood chief film critic, Scott Mantz. The panel will take place on Friday, July 25th at 3:30 PM in Room 24ABC with a screening of the film in the Marina Ballroom at 8:15 PM that night.
In addition, the official FREE ENTERPRISE Kickstarter Video will debut at the panel and go live on Kickstarter on Saturday, July 26th. Starting today, a teaser trailer will be available online as well.
The FREE ENTERPRISE TV SERIES pilot Kickstarter gives fans a unique chance to be part of the FREE ENTERPRISE experience with incentives ranging from T-shirts to autographed posters to a chance to appear in the TV pilot itself with some truly special additions to be announced later this week.
