Throw a stone at any form of media and you are bound to hit something involving Sherlock Holmes. Even though there are so many stories being told about the character it is hard not to get excited about seeing Ian McKellon take on the role.
The world-famous knight actor tweeted out the first picture of himself as Sherlock earlier today.
Over 70 actors have previously played Sherlock Holmes. Now he’s 93 years old and it’s my turn. #MrHolmes pic.twitter.com/B9HkUgfkCv
— Ian McKellen (@IanMcKellen) July 9, 2014
The film that McKellen is attached to is titled Mr. Holmes and is being directed by Bill Condon (Fifth Estate) and is based off the novel by Mitch Cullin entitled A Slight Trick of the Mind.
With a character that has been around for as long as Sherlock Holmes we have been able to see many different iterations, but at this current time we have two, relatively, young takes on the character so it is nice to see a change of pace. And, if McKellen can be Magneto at the age of 75 then hopefully he won’t have any troubles acting in this new role.
With the change from Matt Smith to Peter Capaldi as The Doctor and now Ian McKellen is portraying Sherlock Holmes it is interesting to note that, at least, a few producers aren’t afraid of casting outside of the latest hot, young actor.
Read the synopsis for Mr. Holmes below.
It is 1947, and the long-retired Sherlock Holmes, now 93, lives in a remote Sussex farmhouse with his housekeeper and her young son. He tends to his bees, writes in his journal, and grapples with the diminishing powers of his mind. But in the twilight of his life, as people continue to look to him for answers, Holmes revisits a case that may provide him with answers of his own to questions he didn’t even know he was asking–about life, about love, and about the limits of the mind’s ability to know. A novel of exceptional grace and literary sensitivity, A Slight Trick of the Mind is a brilliant imagining of our greatest fictional detective and a stunning inquiry into the mysteries of human connection.
