Recently, the “broadcast” networks announced their weekly schedules for the fall of 2014 until the summer of 2015. Comics-related properties have spread their wings and will make a big impact on local TV networks.
Besides Arrow on The CW and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, this past season was low on content that came from the comics industry, so it’s nice to see a lot of programming that will grace the “airwaves.”
RETURNING SHOWS
Both of the aforementioned shows are returning this fall, with S.H.I.E.L.D. moving from 8 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday nights.
Shows that have translated to comics returning will include Supernatural from The CW and Grimm on NBC, both remaining in their respective time slots. The Vampire Diaries on The CW is also coming back, and last word is that the weekly digital-first comic will continue as well.
NEW PROGRAMS THAT MIGHT MERIT YOUR ATTENTION
The newly developed “season within a season” strategy on many networks will allow several new programs to become mid-season replacements and allow the primary show to take a breather.
That’s true of Marvel’s Sharon Carter, which will take the place of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a while during the Tuesday 9 p.m. timeslot.
Here’s the show’s description: “Marvel’s Agent Carter, or simply Agent Carter, is an upcoming American television series, based on the Marvel One-Shot short film of the same name. It features the Marvel Comics character Peggy Carter, with Hayley Atwell reprising the role. Set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it will be produced by Marvel Television and air on the ABC network. The series was officially ordered on May 8, 2014, and will debut in January 2015 during the season 2 mid-season break of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
However, that’s not the only new comics-related show coming.
First up, on Monday night, is Gotham on Fox at 8 p.m. ET. First up, on Monday night, is Gotham on Fox at 8 p.m. ET. Here’s this program’s description: “Gotham is an upcoming American superhero television series created by Bruno Heller, based on characters appearing in and published by DC Comics, specifically those of Detective James Gordon and Bruce Wayne, who were created by Bob Kane, and others in DC’s Batman franchise. The series will star Ben McKenzie as the young Gordon. Heller serves as executive producer on the project along with Danny Cannon, who will also direct the pilot. Gotham received a series order from Fox on May 5, 2014, and is scheduled to premiere in the 2014–15 television season.
“As originally conceived, the series would have served as a straightforward story of Gordon’s early days on the Gotham City Police force. The idea evolved not only to include the Bruce Wayne character, but will also tell the origin stories of several Batman villains, including the Penguin, the Riddler, Catwoman, Two-Face, the Joker Poison Ivy and Scarecrow The first season will consist of sixteen episodes.”
As a big Batman fan, I’m really looking forward to this show especially!
Tuesday night at 8 p.m. will find The Flash racing onto The CW. Here’s what that show’s about:
“The Flash is an upcoming American television series developed by writer/producers Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Geoff Johns, to air on The CW. It will be based on the DC Comics character Flash (Barry Allen), a costumed crime-fighter who was created by Robert Kanigher, John Broome and Carmine Infantino. It is a spin-off to Arrow, existing in the same universe. The pilot for the series was written by Berlanti, Kreisberg and Johns, and directed by David Nutter.”
I’m looking forward to seeing how the super powers will be handled in this series!
And last, but hopefully not least, is NBC’s companion show for Grimm, Constantine, which will be based on the DC Comics character. Here’s what that show is about: “Constantine is an upcoming American television series from NBC television, based on the characters appearing in the comic series Hellblazer published by Vertigo. The series will star actor Matt Ryan as John Constantine. The pilot episode will be directed by Neil Marshall and written by David Goyer.”
MAY EACH SHOW BE A SUCCESS!
We’ll know more specifics as we get closer to the each show’s debut date, so stay tuned!
The DC Comics fan in me wants Gotham, The Flash and Constantine to rock, but not everything Batman can be a hit. The Flash also had a great show that didn’t survive previously, and Constantine, well, that movie… .
Still, right now, every show’s a hit, and there’s plenty of promise to go round! Be sure to return here to majorspoilers.com to see what we think so you can also weigh in!

I cant help but think that Gotham is a self limiting show. Gotham has only one option, Gordon can only be the one good cop fighting against corruption and failing at every point. Gotham has to get so bad that Wayne becomes Batman. Gordon cant ever win and things can only get worse otherwise there is no Batman. Would have been much better if they had just went with Gotham Central.
Flash looks like its going to be a successor to Smallville, I hope it is a lot better than Smallville though, having it grounded by being in the same universe as Arrow can only help it.
Constantine looks like it could just be another Supernatural, a bit ironic given Castiel is at least based on the look of Constantine. Unlike most people I rather enjoyed Azzarello’s run on Hellblazer in particularly where Constantine basically talked a hostage taker to death. So i do think Constantine can translate to working in the US, at least we wont have to worry about any of the Green Man stuff that came after Ennis’s run. Cautiously optimistic about Constantine.
Never read iZombie but if it is changing the premise so that it’s crimes are solved by eating dead bodies to see who the murderer was, a similar premise didnt work for Tru Calling and it is not going to work now.
