I enjoyed the heck out of it! It was fun, entertaining and charming. Given my limited Marvel knowledge I though Falcon was well put together, a solid character. For me it has lived up to his predecessor… Robert Redford was good, although italian dub might not have been the best… expecially for Chriss Evans and Samuel L. Jackson.
Throughout the hole movie the bad guys were pretty driven and focus, they were really breathing on characters neck… expecially when the winter soldier came into play.
His rendition was in my opinion pretty good, although his finale was a little bit of a let down, during the movie WS is cold as a popsicle.
My wife and I saw it at a dinner theater. Our hostess was ‘Black Widow’. That added a nice touch to the movie.
Overall, it is an excellent movie. Cap, Natasha, Falcon and Fury all had great scenes. It had more of feel of an ensemble movie than Captain America’s movie.
There were a lot of twist and turns in the movie. A most of them will have repercussions for the rest of the Phase 2 movies and for Agents of SHIELD.
Overall, see the movie. If you watch Agents of SHIELD, see the movie before you watch the next episode.
Halfway through the podcast but 2 points in case they don’t come up by the end of the podcast. One, charred guy is the villain crossbones who in comics kills captain america and is sins (red skulls daughter) boyfriend. 2 did you see brubaker? :)
Really, really good flick. Loved the paranoid, political thriller aspect of the film, and I’d disagree to an certain extent with Stephen’s assessment that this is Red Scare Cap with the Hydra infiltration, but rather a very modern critique of super secret, super powerful rogue domestic agencies.
View Hydra/SHIELD as the modern NSA using metadata collected on everyone under the auspices of keeping us safe. Couple that with the known Bush/Obama policies of maintaining ‘kill lists’ of potential ‘trouble’ targets (overseas, but not a big leap for domestic use in CA:WS), and finally the three helicarriers can be viewed as analogs to current drone policy used to assassinate people on those lists and you have a nice critique and cautionary tale of domestic spying, metadata collection (and assumptions drawn from that data) and drone use buried in one hell of an entertaining action film.
If Avengers gives us a 9-11 allegory, Captain America: The Winter Soldier gives us an allegory about the missteps and horrible political policies of a post 9-11 world.
Bruce, great comments regarding the thematic contents of the movie. Really impressive to have a movie hit so many points and yet end up an entertaining action film.
I have been reading comic books for over 40 years, and I never imagined there would come a day where I would be more excited about a second Avengers movie than about the Superman-Batman movie. Maybe I somehow ended up on Earth-2 (see, DC reference … that’s where I’m coming from). Marvel has done something incredible here and i looks like it will only get better.
Loving these times!
