IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY!
Major Spoilers runs down the comics we are looking forward to, and recommending, this week.
BERSERK TP VOL 37
Writer: Kentaro Miura
Artist: Kentaro Miura
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $14.99
SOLICITATION: Guts the Black Swordsman has again donned the accursed Berserker armor to battle the titanic Sea God—from the inside! To slay the creature, its heart must be pierced, but even if he can manage this impossible task deep within the leviathan, how will Guts get back out?
ROB: It has been awhile since I’ve seen a volume of this and it makes me wonder how far behind I might be. Berserk is always an interesting book to look at at least as Miura has an attention to detail that no one can mess with and you can easily get lost in the images.
BRAIN BOY #3
Writer: Fred Van Lente
Artist: R. B. Silva
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “In a battle between two telepaths, any bystander is a potential ally . . . or a potential enemy! Matt Price, code name Brain Boy, must defeat a mad mental giant but he’ll have to survive a mob of mind-controlled New Yorkers to do it!”
WAYNE: Mind powers are all the rage these days, but this comic does it the best I’ve seen! This issue is the conclusion of the first storyline, so pick up the previous issues so you can get the most out of it! Tons of surprises, great book!
JIM BUTCHER DRESDEN FILES GHOUL GOBLIN HC
Writer: Jim Butcher, Mark Powers
Artist: Joseph Cooper
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $24.99
SOLICITATION: “In Ghoul Goblin, Harry heads to a small, isolated Missouri town terrorized by monsters out of the Nevernever. The singularly unfortunate Talbot family has suffered a curse that has decimated their number for generations, and only our hero can save them… that is, if he can survive hostile lawmen, the dark secrets of townsfolk, an ancient guardian spirit, and two deadly carnivores! Can Dresden cleanse the Talbot bloodline of its curse without a blood sacrifice of his own?”
WAYNE: I’ve loved Mr. Butcher’s Dresden Files novels, so it’s great to get a story I haven’t read there. This was first released in a six-issue miniseries, but I plan to pick this up to keep. If you haven’t read this story and enjoy the exploits of Harry Dresden, be sure to buy this NEW story.
JINNRISE #8
Writer: David Liss, Sohaib Awan
Artist: Andrew Huerta
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “In an effort to the defeat the alien Kibrani, Andrew and his ragtag team continue their quest to assemble an army of Jinn (Genies). Imprisoned for centuries in China, two powerful Jinn may hold the key, but can they be released? Meanwhile, Kibrani Warrior Lahasad Brim will face his greatest test, and a team member’s dark secret is revealed!”
WAYNE: Comics are at their best when they educate as well as entertain. Jinnrise taught me a lot about another culture while keeping me glued to the pages. It’s definitely worth the price! KISS ME, SATAN! #3
Writer: Victor Gischler
Artist: Juan Ferreyra
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: After a bloody zombie battle, a dying witch tells Barnabus Black to cut out her eye. If it’s still in her head when she dies, all her knowledge of the occult will be lost forever. Now for the hard part: Who gets the eye?
RODRIGO: Ohhhhh, I knew I recognized the name. Gischler is also writing Clown Fatale. Which I pretty much hated. This, however still has promise.
SAMURAI JACK #2
Writer: Jim Zub
Artist: Andy Suriano
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Jack can defeat almost any foe in single combat, but how will he fare against a pair of perfectly synchronized warriors who can exploit his every weakness? Cartoon Network’s hit animated series is back at IDW and bigger than ever.
ROB: Back from the past, our samurai from the future is back and as interesting as ever. As excited as I was about issue one, issue two has even more cheer coming.
RODRIGO: So much of the gravity of Samurai Jack was conveyed through stillness and time. I’m interested to see if the comic manages to capture any of that.
THE WAKE #5
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Sean Murphy
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: There have been hints that Lee Archer’s struggle at the bottom of the ocean will have much, much bigger ramifications. A flooded future…an impact on evolution…and more.
Now, we finally find out. If you think you know what THE WAKE is about, this issue changes everything.
GEORGE: I don’t think I know what The Wake is about. Other than mermaids and excellent horror from creators Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy.
WONDER WOMAN #25
Writer: Brian Azzarello
Artist: Goran Sudzuka
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: There’s no time for Wonder Woman to fully comprehend the fallout from last issue’s shocking turn of events as her family gathers to prepare for an assault on Olympus!
RODRIGO: I’m not caught up yet, but I need to start picking these up for when I finally catch up. The stuff I’ve read so far is good, I like the New 52 Wonder Woman.
YOUNG AVENGERS #12
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Jamie McKelvie
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: The Young Avengers versus “The Young Avengers”. The stakes? What have you got? Loki’s scheme reaches its final twist. Expect the team’s jaws to just hit the floor and lie there, twitching for the rest of the comic. A tempting offer for Noh-Varr may get an arrow through his head. Other romance based drama too, as kissing is the new planetary extinction event.
GEORGE: It’s been announced this past week that Young Avengers is coming to a close. This announcement fills me with great chagrin, but it won’t stop me from enjoying this series up until the very last issue. Don’t miss a chance to say goodbye to one of the best Marvel books, period.
ROB: Young Avengers has some of my favorite Marvel characters right now, and Gillen has done a fantastic job handling them. McKelvie’s exploration in the book is also fantastic and I don’t see how any one could not want this book.
