10: For once I’d like to know where I’m going.
11: No, you really wouldn’t.
This got me thinking…so what if John Hurt’s Doctor isn’t a separate incarnation of the Doctor at all…what if he’s an older version of David Tennant’s Doctor from an alternate timeline?
Remember, towards the end of his run, the 10th Doctor almost fell victim to hubris, deciding that there was no reason he shouldn’t enforce his will on the universe. Eventually he realized what would become of him if he tried to do that and accepted his fate.
But what if that wasn’t how it originally went down? What if, originally, Tennant’s Doctor just got more and more sure of his right to do whatever he wanted, becoming the well-meaning but tyrannical master of time? Maybe he even tried reopening the time lock, with the idea that he would destroy the Daleks and rescue the other Time Lords.
But that all went horribly wrong, and some force, perhaps Bad Wolf Rose–or one of the Clara clones–or both–went back along the 10th’s timeline and changed it so he would accept dying and we get the timeline we’ve seen, leaving Hurt’s Doctor as an echo of a timeline that’s been erased.
I know the idea doesn’t make perfect sense, but it wouldn’t be the first time something that didn’t make sense was hand-waived with a call to “TIMEY WIMEY!”
The Doctor once made a comment that something may have been done by a duplicate of himself, and as he was in a parallel timeline at the time, many fans assume that if he wasn’t joking around, there may be alternate incarnations of the Doctor.
My personal theory expands on that to include alternate incarnations within the same timeline. He’s changed some fixed points as well as having arrived in a time that he said had been changed, so I think that it is entirely possible there could be another Doctor who was changed because of something the Doctor we see in the series changed the timeline, but wasn’t changed himself because that version existed at the point of change rather than in the path of the ripples.
Or something like that.
To clarify, I don’t think John Hurt’s Doctor is that, I just think it is a possibility in general.
Yes, I’m crazy enough to look at it frame by frame, and I notice that when Ten and Eleven are on that lounge where they cross their legs and cross their arms there is one of those Dalek tommy guns that the human Daleks used in Evolution of the Daleks on a pedestal behind them. Hmm.
I’m a little annoyed that it appears they’ll be showing the Time War. I feel that’s something best left to the imagination. It shows Galifrey under attack, and what looks like Galifryan (sp?) troops. Kind of generic scifi shoot em up. I just like to imagine the fight between the Time Lord and the Daleks to be at another level. I don’t want to see someone else’s idea of the the Nightmare Child or the Deathsmiths. I just like the idea of a conflict that is conducted on a level that humans can’t comprehend, like explaining drones, ICBMs and cyberware to Julius Ceasar.
