Variety broke the news on Thursday – The Addams Family is headed back to the big screen, but this time not as a live action movie, but an animated flick.

The Addams Family originated in 150 single panel cartoons by Addams, about half of which were published in The New Yorker between 1938 and Addams’ death in 1988. The characters became famous through ABC’s sitcom, which ran for two seasons between 1964 and 1966 and led to several other TV series, two Paramount live-action films and most recently a Broadway musical.

MGM is moving forward with the project, which will be written by Pamela Pettler (Corpse Bride), with Andrew Mittman and Kevin Miserocchi producing. The movie is still in the planning stages at this point as the script hasn’t been turned in, so no word on release date for the movie.

My dream for this would be a black and white, traditionally animated film in Charles Addams’ pen and ink wash style…I think that would be gorgeous, but I imagine it will more likely be 3d/CGI…

I wonder if we can campaign for that?

I am certain they will do the 3-D rendering, but I would love to see the plain 2-D drawings. sometimes, that form fits better.

One of my favorite cartoons showed Morticia and Gomez on the balcony looking down into the living room where Wednesday and Pugsley were over-stoking a fire in the fireplace. The flames were climbing the wall and licking the second floor ceiling. Morticia comments “Isn’t that cute? They still believe in Santa Claus”.
