Comicon week is always a rush of what Lloyd Doubler called “food and sex and spectacle”, certainly not a time for standing still and ponder the vagaries of outrageous fortune. Fortunately, I keep my metaphorical feathers numbered for just such an emergency…
The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) thinks tomorrow we’ll discuss whether Brainiac 5 could defeat Kyle Rayner at Pictionary, asking: Who’d win at chess: patient immortal samurai philosopher Wolverine, or gambit-oriented Batman?
(Before you jump to conclusions, remember that Logan is a centuries-old master strategist and can coordinate being on four teams at once while holding a full-time headmaster job.)

Batman, but he’d cheat. He’d use some kind of spray or something that would inhibit Wolverine’s thinking ability, or send him into berserker mode.
Also, Braniac-5 doesn’t have the people skills for Pictionary.
“(Before you jump to conclusions, remember that Logan is a centuries-old master strategist and can coordinate being on four teams at once while holding a full-time headmaster job.)”
Wait, so in addition to being on N+1 X-Men teams, Wolverine is a Transformer now? I didn’t even think Marvel had the Transformers property anymore :(
Sorry, but it’s still Batman. Batman LOVES slow games of patience and thinking 37 moves ahead. Wolverine loves Snikt. Even if he is a good strategist – and I think that’s debatable – his heart’s not going to really be in the game.
Especially when Batman makes it extra awkward by bringing up Darkclaw.
I think I gotta go with Wolverine. Batman seems like a tactics guy (setting traps, pins, etc). Wolverine seems more of a positional guy (getting control of the board through well-placed pieces). Strong position nearly always beats strong tactics.
In other news… am I the only one who read that first line as “…certainly not a time for standing still and ponder the vaginas of outrageous fortune.”
Quite the turn of phrase…
“Given enough time to prepare …”
Batman.
I don’t know who would win, but you just made chess better by including Batman.
A dimensional portal would open and Dark Claw of the Amalgam Universe would beat both of them. But then he’d have to pop back out or the paradox time bubble would collapse and force the merging that creates Dark Claw to actually happen.
