Current estimates place the number of people attending this year’s San Diego Comic-Con to reach over 130,000. That’s a HUGE turnout, but it still can’t possibly include EVERY fan. So, what do you do if you aren’t attending this year? For instance, I won’t be there, as I’ve mentioned previously.
First, a reminder – the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) takes place this weekend, from July 18 to 21.
Here at MajorSpoilers.com, coverage of the event is already underway. To check out news from SDCC, just click on the button in the right-hand column of the site that has the SDCC logo and says, “Major Spoilers Coverage Here.” You’ll get as close to being there as you can!
SDCC will likely influence events in other parts of the United States, at least for a couple of weeks to come. Some conventions (or “cons”) have moved away from any weekend near SDCC in order to give those who want to attend a time to recharge their credit cards.
Since so many media stars also go to San Diego, it’s tough to get good guests as well right after SDCC.
Still, look for many summer cons to get back to business in early August. The only bad thing about that is many television shows set to debut this fall likely will already be shooting so the program can return according to network schedules.
What about the exclusive screenings that take place during SDCC? They will often appear online after they’re presented, some after the con is over. Keep an eye out for them! Sadly, not all make it to the Web. When I was there, a trailer for a possible Locke & Key television show was shown, but I arrived only two hours early, so I didn’t get a seat. I still haven’t seen that to this day!
If you like to buy SDCC exclusives like toys or books, many of them will arrive in local comics shops a couple of months later. I know, I know – that’s a long wait for some of them, but they’ll be worth that amount of patience, I bet!
Some folks I know online will have what they call “mini-cons” at their local comics shops or at homes this weekend. That can include gaming, discussions about recent books, sharing comics they enjoy with others and even wearing costumes! Not a bad way to share in the festivities!
I realize it’s not totally like actually being there, and I wish everyone who’s going a great experience! But we can all celebrate our love of comics in our own ways this year. I bet several of you have even more creative ways of sharing what you enjoy this weekend. Feel free to share them in the comments section below!
