Major Spoilers Poll of the Week
On the Road to Nerdtacular, there were a lot of interesting conversations. One topic that lasted a long time was discussion of local gaming stores – those places where you can buy table top games of all kinds, sit around and play an RPG with friends, or flip the Magic: The Gathering Cards until the wee hours of the morning. The realization that the closest stand alone gaming store (a store that doesn’t sell comic books or video games) was 150 miles away from the Major Spoilers HQ brought the mood way down, and it made us wonder how many others were in the same situation.

Is there a dedicated game store (not video games) within 50 miles of your home?

    Great show as always, guys!

Got a thought during the amazon-link promotion though. I’m very happy to sponsor you guys on a monthly basis (and i want to encourage everyone to chip in, show your love for the show and site, wooo). But i’d love for my occational amazon shopping to benefit you all as well.

Problem is that i live in the magical land of Europia, and do my shopping through amazon.de or .co.uk.
Just wanted to suggest that you could maybe make some extra money from worldwide if you make a link deal with them too.
You have propably already given this some thought, but just wanted to say it.

I do believe that you after you click our Amazon link you can change the .com to the .co.uk/.de in the url and it will work just the same.

On a friend’s recommendation I just grabbed Timeline as well, and it’s pretty cool. Games can be anywhere from 10-30 minutes, but if you’ve just got one set you’ll run through most of the cards after just a few games. I’ll definitely be grabbing more of the sets over the next few weeks.

“Such & Such” the card game.

Requirements: You need a standard 52 card deck and 4 players. You will only care about the ranks of the cards. Suits do not matter.

Victory: A player wins when he/she has played all of his/her cards to the table.

Set-up: Shuffle the deck and deal out, face-down, 4 cards to the center of the table. These 4 cards will never be seen during the game. Then deal out the rest of the cards to the players. Each player will have 12 cards in each of their hands. Play starts with the player to the left of the dealer. This player becomes the caller.

Gameplay: On the caller’s turn, she/he chooses two different ranks of cards from her/his hand and announces them to the rest of the players. Examples: “Queen and Seven” or “Nine and Four”. The player to the left may play the two cards to the table or pass to the next player to the left.

If all the other players pass, the caller gets to put the two cards to the table and the player to the left gets the turn and becomes the caller. If one of the other players had played the called cards then the caller gets to take another turn. The game continues until someone plays their last two cards to the table and wins.

Notes: This is a quick game I came up with while listening to the rest of the podcast. If anyone plays this, let me know what you think.

I really like this story and I feel that it more or less captures what first drew me to the character when I was a kid. He’s about the tension between tendency and aspiration. Yukio is wild and violent, and quite literally throws herself at him. All he has to do to get her is do what comes easy. Mariko on the other hand is entangled in cultural sophistication. While neither are especially fleshed out in this story, I feel that the choice between the two is more about the choice between being a beast and being a man — at least that’s how I read it. There is plenty of valid criticism to be made against the book. For myself, nostalgia and subjective interpretation (projection?) makes it a personal favorite.
