Jeez, man, give us a chance to see the bloody movie first! For those of us on the west coast, it only started showing an hour ago…
Saw it last night a REALLY enjoyed it….Still much more action oriented than the TV series or the previous movies…but it had a touch of moral ambiguity and social commentary that was missing from the first Abrams movie/
Saw it last night with my wife.
In her words, “on a scale of 1 to stupid, this movie rates a 7.3… that’s not a good thing”
From my point of view, I liked almost every component of this movie. Each cast member had their moment of awesome.
However, when I assembled this jigsaw puzzle I didn’t quite jump for joy at the resulting picture.
This is a very decent summer action flick. It’s pretty and slick. There are lots of original series references too that made me smile.
I just wanted a little bit more… well… Star Trek, I guess. It felt a little like JJ Abrams took the Star Trek franchise and made a roller coaster ride out of it.
Hopefully that makes a bit of sense.
I agree that this is less “Trek” than I would have liked, but its more “Trek” than the last one…..soooooo……thats good….
I just got back from seeing it. I liked it! J. J. Abrams has produced another masterpiece. He has succeeded in moving his “new” Star Trek universe closer to the original, but with his own style intact. He delivers more character development this time around, and moves us closer to the original series by bringing in a sub-plot relating to topical issues, something that has been missing ever since Star Trek moved to the big screen. Admiral Marcus’s behavior echos Bush’s using a terrorist attack and the twisting of facts to embroil us in two undeclared wars of aggression. The new long range weapons in the movie might be analogous with unmanned drones, etc. Kirk almost lets his need for vengeance lead him astray. Yet the good guys do the right thing and win out in the end, which is classic Trek all the way. I won’t offer any spoilers, but I will point out that the trailers and ads were all cleverly orchestrated deceptions to keep us from guessing the true story and plot. Well done, Mr. Abrams, well done!
Ultimate Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Kahn.
Entertaining but old timers will probably enjoyed the story telling the first time around
I can’t believe we waited 4 years for a remake of Wrath of Khan. I was disappointed in the lack of overall originality in this movie. Which film had Khan? Both. Which had a main character dying? Both. Which had a battle between Federation ships? Both. Which had Carol Marcus as a ‘pivotal’ figure in the movie? Both. Which had the following lines, “the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few”, “KHAAAAANNNNN!”, “You’ll flood the whole compartment!”, among others? Both! And on…and on. For all the subtle changes (Kirk dies instead of Spock…but he comes back thanks to McCoy’s timely experiment with Khan’s blood and a dead tribble, crappy Klingon BoPs that can be take down with a laser gatling gun, the death of Pike, and a british Carol Marcus [no need to explain that one], the crappy Star Trek I uniforms + horrible WWI-esqe wheel caps, ) there wasn’t enough left to make this movie anything but a cop-out and cheap, CGI infused remake of the best Star Trek movie of the franchise. I no longer have any faith in J.J. Abrams, Robert Orci, or Alex Kurtzman to handle the franchise. Why all the damn secrecy if they were just going to remake Wrath of Khan?! What was all that research they did for all those years going towards? It’s like they only watched the Star Trek movies and said, “I’m too bored to write anything original. Let’s combine Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock (klingons and regeneration), and Insurrection and see what comes out.” They need to dump this crew and get a new team in for whatever Star Trek III is waiting in the wings. I hope it’s better than this one. Seems J.J. Abrams’ new reboot of the Star Trek universe is to make all the odd numbered films good and make the even numbered ones suck. And one last question…why did J.J. Abrams replace his much aligned ‘lens flare’ style with an equally bad ‘close-up on the face’ style? 3 out of 5 stars. (ya get one bonus star for spelling your name right)
I’ve been slipped a message that says Paramount isn’t rushing to a third movie just yet, but instead venturing back to television.
