Major Spoilers Poll of the Week
Reality horror films have been around for decades now, with the Blair Witch Project still sending Matthew diving under the covers the instant the snot rocket scene appears. There have been a number of franchises that have used the found footage gimmick to put the scare into audiences, and get that well timed jump of fright.
Discussion:
BLOOM COUNTY
Berkley Breathed’s Bloom County was one of the most popular and critically acclaimed newspaper strips of all time. Bloom County ran from December 8th, 1980 to August 6th, 1989 and was published in an astounding 1200 newspapers on a daily basis. The huge popularity of Bloom County spawned a merchandizing bonanza, as well as two spin-off strips, Outland and Opus. The Bloom County Library Volume 1 highlights the first time the entire run of the immensely popular Bloom County strip has been collected in beautifully designed hard cover books with exceptional reproduction.

Volume 1 is very educational. It does show that evolution of a strip finding its voice, characters emerging and becoming the heart of the strip, while others drift into the background.
Bloom County is one of THE pieces of 80s media. If you want to understand the zeitgeist of the decade, Bloom County literally gives you day-by-day insights. When it went away and became Outland it truly represented the end of the 80s for me.
As a current events influenced strip it is dated in a lot of ways, but the less topical stuff also holds up and is still funny as hell. As a kid, I loved the strip so much that I went out of my way to find out who Capar Weinberger was. I certainly recommend the later volumes to see the strip at its funniest, when it was firing on all cylinders. Great stuff.
Here I was thinking someone would call me out for choosing a comedy (Drop Dead Gorgeous) in the poll, but I guess I got away with it this time! I suppose it isn’t really a film that really sticks on the minds of people.
I keep hearing people (including Stephen) argue that you couldn’t have The Mandarin’s rings in Iron Man because you can’t have ‘magic’ in a ‘tech’ story. Even accepting that, the origin of the rings is that they were part of a spaceship’s engine. That’s ‘tech’ folks. Iron Man has flat disks on the palm of his hands that shot lasers, there is no reason a ring couldn’t do the same blame thing. They want us to believe people can breathe fire but not that rings could. RANT DONE.
Regarding the Iron Man 3 discussion, the way they handled magic in the Thor movie was not actually saying that it was all advanced technology but that what the Asgardians use is beyond what humans understand as both science and magic, they actually do say that what Loki uses is strait up magic, alternatively in the comics the mandarin’s 10 rings are not actually magic but alien technology from space dragons.
