ANGEL & FAITH TP VOL 02 DADDY ISSUES
Writer: Christos Gage
Artist: Rebekah Isaacs with Chris Samnee
Publisher: Dark Horse
Cover Price: $17.99
SOLICITATION: The dark streets of London are increasingly dangerous as murderers, mystically devoid of emotion, begin to impact the lives of Angel and Faith. In unraveling this new mystery, the pair follow clues in the Watcher’s Files to a demon from Giles’s past and a “child” from Angel’s. Then, Drusilla returns to her homeland and becomes the hot new vampire in the underground scene! While Angel faces Dru, Faith must deal with issues that reawaken her inner turmoil—a visit from her deadbeat dad, who’s looking for a favor, and a troubled Slayer hell bent on revenge. Collects Angel & Faith #6–#10.* Includes the one-shot featuring Giles’s magical great-aunts!
* With guest artist Chris Samnee (Serenity)!
* Drusilla is back!

ROB: Coming in late to most things Buffy or Whedon I tend to enjoy the full stories more and as such wait for the trades, sorry Matthew. Because of this, I get a little more excited when I do get Buffy-verse because of how often I don’t get to read new material. That said, this should be good as the first volume was great and these are some of the strongest characters in the series.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #698
Writer: Dan Slott
Artist: Richard Elson
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The end of Spider-Man’s world begins when Doctor Octopus discovers who Peter Parker really is.

ROB: The beginning of the end is here. And for once that’s not an exaggeration designed to sell comics. This issue begins the final story arc of Amazing Spider-Man, and I m more than happy to see Dan Slott at the helm. If you have ever had any interest in Spidey, this is a comic you are going to want to pick up.

STEPHEN: I’m so going to read the HECK out of this book. With two issues to go, and Superior Spider-Man on the way, I can’t wait to see how Dan Slott transitions us to the new age of Marvel… NOW!

CAPTAIN AMERICA #1
Writer: Rick Remender
Artist: John Romita Jr
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Thrust into a bizarre, inhospitable world far from home, the all-new, high-adventure, mind-melting, tough-as-nails, sci-fi, pulp-fantasy era of Captain America is NOW! With no country and no allies, what’s left for the Sentinel of Liberty to protect? The Saga of Dimension Z begins here!

GEORGE: It’s no secret that I am a big Rick Remender fan, and I will give any title of his a chance. The promise of Captain America battling it out in a pulp-inspired alternate dimension actually sounds pretty darn fun. Remender’s classic “Fear Agent” shows that he can do pulp with the best of ‘em, and it might be nice to read a lighter Captain America yarn for once. This is my most anticipated title of the week.

CLONE #1
Writer David Schulner
Artist: Juan Jose Ryp & Felix Serrano
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: From ROBERT KIRKMAN’s Skybound imprint, comes a sci-fi story like you’ve never seen before! Dr. Luke Taylor’s perfect life comes to a dramatic halt when an identical, bloodied version of himself arrives at his doorstep with news that he is one of many clones… and they’re all after his pregnant wife and their unborn child!

RODRIGO: It’s a good time to be someone who enjoys Sci-Fi comics, Dark Horse and Image are putting out enough new titles that something’s bound to stick. Could this be the one?

STEPHEN: The mystery of a clone showing up on your doorstep is a trope that has played out multiple times. Throw in a secret society, DNA manipulation, and conspiracy theory on top of conspiracy theory, and you’ve got a book that I’m picking up.

COMEBACK #1
Writer: Ed Brisson
Artist: Michael Walsh
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: Reconnect is more than a company – it’s an opportunity for good. Reconnect can reverse tragedy by sending agents into the past to rescue your mother, your wife, your brother or father or child moments before their untimely death. Mark is one of these agents. He brings the rescued from the past to the present, to a blessed reunion with their loved ones. He saves lives…or does he?

GEORGE: Sounds like a cool, high-concept bit of science fiction. Time travel is highly entertaining when handled right, and this reminds me of a similar concept from John Varley’s classic short story “Air Raid” (do NOT see the movie it was adapted into, “Millennium”). Michael Walsh’s art looks great in the previews too.

CONTROPUSSY
Writer: Emma Caulfield and Camilla Outzen Rantsen
Artists: Christian Meesey and Thomas Mauer
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $19.99
SOLICITATION: From Emma Caulfield, the popular actress who portrayed Anya on Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and co-writer Camilla Rantsen, comes Contropussy, a story about a cat with a major itch to scratch. By day she is a mild mannered feline, but by night she comes alive, adventuring in the city, eventually finding herself a pawn in political schemes. Softcover, 128 pages, full color. Cover price $19.99.

RODRIGO: Sometimes I’m drawn to a book because of the art. Other times I’m interested in a cool premise. Sometimes a book accrues enough random weirdness points that I suddenly become very interested.

DAREDEVIL #20
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Chris Samnee
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION:
• The year’s most critically acclaimed comic book is back as BLIND MAN BLUFFED continues!
• Daredevil’s newest threat, The Coyote, is not what Matt expects.
• Say Goodbye to NYC, Matt Murdock.

MATTHEW: There’s very little wrong with this book, except that it’s not coming out more often. Mark Waid has breathed new life into Daredevil without killing his wife or over-emphasizing his ninja training, and has even made a formidable contender out of the likes of the Spot, without having to resort to retcons or convoluted jackassery. (All-New X-Men? I’m looking at you right now.)

DARK AVENGERS #183
Writer: Jeff Parker
Artist: Neil Edwards
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
Cover Image:
SOLICITATION: • Bid farewell to Ghost, Centurius, Man-Thing and the gang forever!
• Jeff Parker and Neil Edwards plot a dark new course for Earth’s Deadliest Heroes!

GEORGE: “Thunderbolts” was renamed Dark Avengers some months ago, and the book began to split time between the old Thunderbolts team and the newer (and honestly, less interesting) Dark Avengers. This issue demarcates the end of that awkward split, as the title will be taken over entirely by the latter group. I will miss the Thunderbolts greatly, as Jeff Parker was able to humanize a motley lot of some of Marvel’s stranger bad guys. Dark Avengers will continue on, but I wonder if it will be as fun without Ghost, Moonstone, Man-Thing, and Troll.

HAWKEYE #4
Writer: Matt Fraction
Artist: Javier Pulido
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: You won’t believe what’s on The Tape! S.H.I.E.L.D. recruits Clint to intercept incriminating evidence—before he becomes the most wanted man in the world. The situation quickly becomes a thriller that spans the globe and the darkest parts of Hawkeye.

MATTHEW: Why won’t you buy Hawkeye? What is wrong with you? It’s fun, it’s adventurous, it’s brilliantly drawn… It’s like a new life for a character who has been up and down the hero ranks like a whore’s drawers, a hero who has been in desperate need of a solid, cementing portrayal done with energy and awesome, and THIS IS THAT SERIES! Don’t you get it? Is it me? Do you hate joy, is that it? You’re probably hoarding Twinkies, too, aren’t you? I can’t even LOOK at you anymore! I’m going to stay at my mother’s, and don’t you DARE try to call me! *sob*

ROB: Fraction has turned a character I never cared about into one of my favorite reads in less than four issues. Now with issue four I’m hooked and will be happy to read this book from now til the inevitable cancellation. If you like strong character work and a focus on the less super side of heroics, this title is where you should go.

STEPHEN: Matthew and I are reviewing this on the next Dueling Review Podcast, so I guess I best grab this, and you should, too!

ROCKETEER CARGO OF DOOM #4
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Chris Samnee
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Cliff Secord, AKA, the Rocketeer, finds himself flying high over the smog-drenched skies of Los Angeles, locked in mortal combat with an ancient and terrifying creature… and then it all starts to go to Hell! Plus, the ultimate truth about Peevy’s niece is revealed! The final issue of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee’s Rocketeer series is going full throttle and the thrills show no signs of slowing down-miss this comic at your own peril!

STEPHEN: THIS IS IT! Can’t wait to see what Mark Waid and Chris Samnee have in store for us in this final chapter of Cargo of Doom! With a new weapon and dinosaurs still running around, this final issue could be the best thing that comes out this week.

SPAWN #225
Writer: Todd McFarlane
Artist: Szymon Kudranski
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “DE-PROGRAMMED,” Part One
MILESTONE 225th issue! AND…FOR THE FIRST TIME…the results of a Presidential Election will directly affect the events to come.

On November 6th, the citizens of the United States of America will select their Commander In Chief. The winner, and his goals and agendas, will play a role in shaping the next stage in Jim Downing’s evolution.

Meanwhile…Jim’s long search for answers about his past comes to an end in this two-part story, featuring the return of fan-favorite villain, Jason Wynn.

Wynn, the master puppeteer whose manipulations led to Al Simmons’ original fall from grace, now lays bare the full truth regarding Jim’s role in “The Project.” But what are Wynn’s true intentions? And what ramifications do they have on global events.

RODRIGO: Wait… for the first time a presidential election will affect the events to come? In Spawn specifically? Because seriously Spider-Man and Superman have met every president.
