For years we’ve seen the Goon animated movie trailer floating around the Intardwebz with the hopes that Eric Powell’s characters would finally get H’wood money to make the movie a reality. Well, H’wood isn’t going to fork over the funds, so Blur Studio, Powell, David Fincher, and Dark Horse Comics are headed to Kickstarter to get the project off the ground.
For over 12 years, Eric Powell’s comic book “The Goon” has amassed fans around the globe with its fantastic world of mobsters, zombies, killer robots, giant fish-men and mayhem. Two years ago, David Fincher and Blur Studio optioned “The Goon”, developed a feature film script written by Powell and created a proof of concept clip to show Hollywood studios the incredible potential of a Goon animated movie. While the clip generated lots of enthusiasm, the movie still isn’t green-lit primarily because PG13 animation is a challenging concept for studios.
Unlike other projects we’ve featured, the Goon Kickstarter project is only to fund a feature length story reel, which will give studios a very good understanding of what a full blown animated feature would be about. The price to get this animatic off the ground is $400,000, which means it has a long way to go if it hopes to reach the goal in the next 29 days.
If you want to see the movie move closer to reality, it’s probably a good idea to fund the project now.
