As Universal Pictures and Focus Features move closer to bringing E L James’ Fifty Shades of Grey to the big screen, they first need to adapt it for film The studios have hired Kelly Marcel to complete the task.
Marcel most recently wrote the script, Saving Mr. Banks, the story of Walt Disney’s pursuit of the film rights for what would later become Marry Poppins. She is also the co-creator and executive producer of Terra Nova.
“Kelly’s work demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humor and depth of character which is particularly visible in the celebrated screenplay for the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks,” said De Luca. “We were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelley’s engagement with the characters and world E L James has created and we knew she was the right person to augment our Fifty Shades family,” added Brunetti.
It will be interesting to see how the film is adapted for the big screen especially since The Secretary – while critically acclaimed – barely made $10 million at the box office. Of course Fifty Shades has a huge fan base from book sales, and people have taken to the Twilight series on which the Fifty Shades series is based, so there could be some big money to be made.
