NCSoft has decided to close down Paragon Studios, the company in charge of City of Heroes, which means the first Super Hero MMORPG will be shutting down as well.

Comic Booked has the news and a comment from the Community Manager of Paragon Studios, Andy Belford.

City of Heroes will be closing its doors by the end of the year due to a decision by parent company NCsoft. In a realignment of company focus and publishing support, NCsoft has made the decision to close Paragon Studios. Effective immediately, all development on City of Heroes will cease and we will begin preparations to sunset the world’s first, and best, Super Hero MMORPG before the end of the year. As part of this, all recurring subscription billing and Paragon Market purchasing will be discontinued effective immediately. We will have more information regarding a detailed timeline for the cessation of services and what you can expect in game in the coming weeks.

While the news is disappointing it isn’t terribly surprising. City of Heroes was the first Super Hero MMO and has been around for most of this century. Of course the Heroes and Villains of Paragon City are not taking this new without a fight. And the hope, though minimal, continues to grow with Alpha Wolf’s, one of the producers, message in the Admin channel.

Sorry guys but I don’t have any new update. I know Paragon management is having discussion with ncsoft and investors. Continue get people to sign online petitions, post on game forums, and just continue to make noises so ncsoft cannot ignore players.

While this isn’t much, it does mean the developers aren’t all ready to give up yet. Other tips on how you can help can be found here.
