Good news for fans of Marvel’s The Avengers, Disney has confirmed that Joss Whedon is returning to write and direct Avengers 2.
“Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015,” Disney said in a statement. “As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”
I wonder how long those negotiations lasted, and how many dump trucks pulled up to Mr. Whedon’s house loaded with money to have him return to the franchise that has made over $1.5 billion worldwide.
Disney also announced that this would be the first Marvel film Disney would distribute and market itself.

If not, I wonder how big Joss Whedon’s cut was from the first Avengers movie. As for Disney marketing and distributing the films themselves, I sort of wondered how long it would take them to wake up and ask “why are we paying somebody else to do this for us?” Joss Whedon being tapped to do they next movie is a good thing! Unless he decided to put Squirrelgirl in the next movie…
