For fans of color-coded superheroics, Major Spoilers has glad tidings of kung-fu joy!
Saban Brands has announced that their latest offering, Power Rangers Megaforce, will hit the airwaves in 2013, and will serve as a 20th Anniversary season for the Power Rangers franchise. Megaforce will be adapted from Tensou Sentai Goseiger, the thirty-fourth entry in the long-running Super Sentai television series, which featured the story of five apprentice angels fighting an ancient starfaring empire to save the Earth and return to their extra-dimensional home.
LOS ANGELES (June 11, 2012) – (Virtual Press Office) – Saban Brands will launch the newest version of Power Rangers, the number-one kids action series on television, with Power Rangers Megaforce . The all new series, which premieres in 2013, will deliver mega action, humor, excitement, and entertainment, in addition to the core themes of friendship, teamwork, fitness, and helping others. Power Rangers Megaforce will air as Saban Brands celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the Power Rangers franchise.
“Power Rangers continues to delight fans of all ages, even nearly 20 years after it was first introduced to kids across the world,” said Elie Dekel, President of Saban Brands. “We are excited to continue the success we’ve experienced with our partnership with Nickelodeon and introduce fans everywhere to a MEGA- installment in 2013.”
Power Rangers Megaforce introduces a plot line that is sure to captivate audiences with exciting new characters, villains, and high-octane action. The new series features Gosei, a supernatural guardian who for centuries, has protected the earth with his robotic aide, Tensou. But when the evil Warstar aliens begin their massive invasion, Gosei calls upon five teenagers with attitude to form the ultimate team…the Power Rangers Megaforce!
When the teens morph into Power Rangers, they gain superhuman strength, agility, and mastery over martial arts. In addition to defending earth against the Warstar aliens, other monstrous factions emerge to challenge the Megaforce Rangers. Under the leadership of a malevolent alien, toxic beasts rise from their slimy underground lair to attack the Earth and a ruthless robot army launches an offensive from their deep sea compound. In order to face these new threats, the Power Rangers Megaforce unlock powerful battle modes to fight their adversaries. Go Go Power Rangers! – fans can look forward to all new MEGA adventures in 2013.

While I’m uncertain how faithful the plot adaptation will be to the Goseiger source material (the whole ‘fallen angel’ motif having the potential for controversy) Saban’s plans for Megaforce reportedly include the return of previous Power Rangers for the 20th anniversary season. As a fan of both the Japanese and American incarnations of the show, my only sadness stems from the disappointment that we won’t get to see an American anniversary adaptation of the awesome Pirate Sentai Gokaiger season that followed Goseiger in Japan.
Power Rangers Megaforce is scheduled to premiere on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons in early 2013.

So they decided to go with Goseiger after all. Only now instead of angels protecting the Earth it’s now a throwback to the 1st show. And instead of Tensou being a technique; it’s now a robot. Also my guess is that Gosei Knight instead of being an awakened headder will now be a proper morphing actor.
Hard to say. Those in the know say that PR: Samurai is a pretty decent adaptation (at least I’ve heard so, as I haven’t really watched either Shinkenger or Samurai enough to say), so I’m hoping this will be at least interesting… I’m also hoping that the naming conventions aren’t only shout-outs. My worry is that they did two seasons of Samurai because they don’t intend to adapt Gokaiger at all, given the season’s historical nature.
They reshot or are reshooting scenes of the 199 Great Hero Battle film for use with PR, and it only specifically mentioned elimination pre-Zyuranger characters and the core five Dairanger characters. Unless things changed significantly, it does seem to point that there will at least be some form of Gokaiger adaptation that meshes with the Power Ranger history.
I wouldn’t be so sure about Gosei Knight being a proper morphing actor. They kept DekaBreak from having an unmorphed actor to save money when they had the character as Omega Ranger in SPD. Although that was Disney and not Saban, I think they might still try to save a few dollars to put towards other effects if they can help it. Don’t forget that they also kept Ninjaman/Ninjor, Signalman/Blue Senturion and VRV Master/Phantom Ranger as “always in that form” characters back in the early days.
Do you think they’ll be shooting it in New Zealand again? I think it’s all we have to fall back on when Peter Jackson isn’t making a film. :p
Matthew, I pretty much agree that they’re probably not going to adapt Gokaiger for that exact reason, remember that many thought that Shinkenger wouldn’t be adapted because it was “too Japanese,” but Saban found a way to make it work. Shinkenger and Gokaiger are both excellent and, while I can’t stand the Samurai adaptation, I hope Gokaiger at least gets the opportunity to be brought West.
All I have to now is this: will they still say hi-yaah every three seconds?
the power rangers megaforce team will be the old team consisting of an jayden, mia, kevin, antonio, and mike plus maybe deker will join the team as the robo knight. gosei will be kind of like zordan and other ranger mentors as he calls upon the newer rangers to help save the world . this time the series has new more powerful villains who are from other planets or deep under the oceans and from slime filled pits each villain has new powers that are completly unstoppable. tensou will probably be like alpha from the orginal series and helps with technological matters.
