Think you know everything there is to know about the X-Men and their origins? Guess again as in August 2012, Marvel gives us The First X-Men.
The company announced the project will involve Neal Adams, Cristos Gage, and Nick Lowe. Lowe, the X-book editor, said this will be a book that X-Men fans will go nuts for, while Adams said the series is “maybe groundbreaking.”
Adams posited the concept was that Professor X wasn’t the person who started protecting young mutants. “Maybe this was going on when Professor X was a teenager and mutants were being abused by the government … and somebody stepped out to protect these kids. … Who would he be and why would he go to Charles Xavier? … That became my premise.”
Considering we know the concept of mutants existed during World War II and before, this doesn’t seem like an idea that is too far from the Marvel timeline. And it also fits with elements seen in the X-Men: First Class movie.
“Basically it takes place before the original X-Men and it’s a time when mutants are coming [out in the country],” said Gage. “In this context, Wolverine is noticing this going on and says, ‘Someone needs to protect these people.'” Wolverine allies with Sabertooth and approach a young Professor X, who is engaged to be married and “wants no part of it.” The writer also characterized the book as “The Magnificent Seven,” but with X-Men. There will also be some of Magneto killing Nazis.
Right now, the series is planned to be five issues long, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets extended (or see a number of tie-ins) should it be as groundbreaking and successful as Lowe and Adams hope.

The next series after that will be “Wolverine…First Pope”. This is getting ridiculous.
More Wolverine? Thank god! We never see enough of this guy.
Wow, Marvel. Why don’t you bend over and… no, I’m not going there. This is a family site. Boy am I ever glad I don’t pick up Marvel anymore.
So it wasn’t Charles idea at all it was Wolverine’s idea. Wait till next months new series, Wolverine: Mutant Jesus!
Wolverine actually predates Galactus. Our universe was formed from adamantium and cynicism.
Wolverine is actually Namor’s father. Don’t any of you remember that one time when Logan made out with a flying fish?
Wolverine is actually his *own* father. He spontaneously split off a carbon copy of himself, using his mutant regeneration power to survive.
Also explains how he appears in all titles, all the time.
Thus opening the door for Marvel to add the Bible to its Classics Illustrated with Logan’s first appearance in the Book of Genesis.
Logan spoketh “Bub” and made Marvel money. And lo, Marvel counted their money and called it Good.
I think it looks kinda cool…
I did like Nick Lowe’s “Cruel To Be Kind”.
It’s just a reason for some fanboy with a writing gig to make up even more mutants and get Wolverine on the page.
terrible idea and art looks crappy. pass.
The idea some mutant before Charles thought to bring mutants together & protect them?
Good.
The idea it was freaking Wolverine? STUPID AS HELL.
Hell Apocalypse or Mister Sinister doing it would make more freaking sense.
I once saw two men kissing at Stark’s Pond and that was the gayest thing I had ever seen.
Until this.
remember when wolverine was a caveman and all life on earth came from him in marville?
that was a joke, this isn’t.
Not only is the concept incredible awful and pandering to the audience of the X-Men movies (one franchise that I would LOVE to see a reboot of. I think I was one of the people that took one look at “First Class” and threw up a little in my mouth. Awful movie) but that art would have been awful in the 1980’s.
Next thing you know we’ll be finding out that Logan is actually an Eternal or a Kree….
Does anyone have a rolled up newspaper to hit Marvel with…
