If you are a fan of Game of Thrones and have been jumping up and down in anticipation of the second season of the series on HBO, then you’ll be happy to know you only have two and a half months to wait.
HBO has announced season two will kick off on April 1, 2012. The popular season looks to be once again following the HBO Season by releasing only 10 episodes.
Go ahead, vent your frustration of only 10 weeks of storytelling, I know I’ve been doing it for years as networks and studios have been routinely cutting back on episodes per season.

Im not sure of the length of seasons in America but here in Britain the definition of a series is all over the place for example Doctor who has a 12 episode which is split into 2 halves over the year (at least thats been the trend for the last two) or even Sherlock that is a lowly 3 episodes per season (although each is 90 mins and very high quality)
I think 10-12 episode seasons are fantastic. No filler, just quality- from what I’ve seen (GoT, Damages, Homeland, Dexter, etc.). Imagine how much better shows with a 20+ season could be if the filler was chucked and the number of episodes cut in half. ‘Bones’, I’m looking at you. It drives me nuts that Sherlock is only three episodes per season but those shows are fantastic. Plus, I was able to see Cumberbatch in a play last year. If he was committed to a lengthy TV schedule I doubt he’d have time for much else except in the summer when the show is on hiatus.
I have to say that I actually prefer shorter seasons. You have better story telling and higher productions values. I don’t’ subscribe to the “more is better” line of thinking that equates 22 episodes with quality. Honestly, all you’re getting is quantity and often that quantity has sacrificed quality very openly.
btcan and I are of the same mindset. Many shows in the UK are presenting short seasons that an high quality from every perspective. Seeing as many shows on US screens are UK imports, it’s no wonder that producers are catching on to a very worthy trend.
Game of Thrones was an intense ten weeks of quality writing, acting, direction and production. The fact that you’re grumbling for more, Stephen, pretty much shows me that you loved the quality found in those few weeks. Surely you wouldn’t want to tamper with something that works well… ;)
