One successful relaunch I like is the JJ Abrams’ new take on “Star Trek”, which somewhere between a prequel and a reboot. In particular, I like that it makes several major changes to the timeline (such as the death of Kirk’s father and the destruction of Vulcan) and plays around with the ripple effects to the remaining continuity. Of course, we still have to see how these ripple effects will take effect in future sequels/spin-off’s.
My favorite relaunch is Buffy. the film was not really good :-) but the relaunch as a tv series was supergood.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!
A few great reboots come to mind. Battlestar Galactica, for sure- the dark, gritty, vaguely spiritual and harshly desperate tone of the re-imagined series was fantastic. Plus, giving Starbuck boobs was probably a good idea.
Stargate SG-1 also comes to mind. While I liked the film, the show that came from it was, in my own personal worldview, among the best sci-fi TV shows ever.
My favorite, though, would have to be Dexter. Jeff Lindsay’s “Dexter” novels are great, but there’s just something special about the reworked Dexterverse of the TV series. I’ll certainly concede the point Rodrigo made in one of his articles that the stereotypical grade-school spanish spoken in the show is irritating and slightly condescending. Aside from that, though, I’d call it one of the most perfect television series I’ve ever seen. Writing, acting directing, production value, art direction, editing, scoring, color correction, EVERYTHING about Dexter hits me in the exact right way. Dexter is my favorite reboot.
It seems like a no-brainer but we have yet to mention Christopher Nolans relaunche of Batman!
Looking forward to see what he and the Zack can do with Superman.
A relaunch Im sad that we never got to see was Tim Burtons Superman. Compaired to all the average wierd-acting-Jonny-Depp movie of the week. This would have been …. interesting.
BEST REBOOT – Battlestar Galactica
Frackin AWESOME
You get some of the best sci-fi of all time in this show, from politics, religion, government, and military points of view. Oh and there are toasters trying to kill you that man created as well (not lizard people). The way everything tied together but did not. It had one of the best series finale ever. The battle on and off the ships, DAME. Then when Starbuck jumped Galactic for the last time and watching the ship just die in front of you was well, Frackin Sweet and that was just the first hour. The music scores, ship design, cinematography, casting, acting, and plots all outstanding. “They Have A Plan” and it worked! Also Edward James Olmos as Commander Adama, best casting ever!
Going to be Great Reboot – Thundercats
I have watch the old cartoon growing up and 7 episodes in to the reboot I have enjoyed it very much. The tie in with Lion-O ancestors and Mumm-Ra is great and I like the way the teams has formed. It has kept the Tech/Magic feel from the show in the 80’s and is well done. My DVR is making sure I witness this every week.
Very happy that Snarf does NOT talk at all. Thundercats HOOOOOOOOOO!
I really like the Thundercats reboot. My kids and I watch it every week.
I was also a big fan of the DC comics reboot formerly know as Smallville.
