If you were wondering if everything Grant Morrison has done with Batman, Inc. will be swept under the rug when DC relaunches its superhero line, IGN is reporting that the Batman of Africa – Batwing, is getting his own title, written by Judd Winick, with art by Ben Oliver.

“Batwing #1 is a series that spins right out of Grant Morrison’s Batman Incorporated storyline. This is the first time that we have an in-continuity black character wearing the Batman costume,” said Batman group editor Mike Marts. “Grant has provided us with so many new characters and concepts. He’s really just been a fountain of ideas and energy for the Batman group of titles. We have so many different cool things to choose from what Grant creates, and we go with what we think is going to provide readers with the most story and the most excitement. And with this, Batwing won out.”

As long as they make this character unique outside of being part of the Batman group, it could be interesting.

You know what, I was thinking of a mix of Black Panther and The Falcon, too.

Thank Jelly Jars and little Candied Cupcakes that they didn’t call him “The Black Bat” which they would have done had they thought him up in the 60s or 70s!

Of all the incorporated Batmen, this was my least favorite concept. “Africa” is a huge continent, diverse in people, ethnicities, cultures and conditions. There are Batmen of many specific countries (probably one in Lichtenstein too), but for the black character, DC gave him “Africa” (y’know, the black country).

Anyone could see why Th Batman of the Orient” or “The Batman of South America” would be ridiculous. But a “Batman of Africa” not only made it to print, but bloggers and the DC readership don’t notice that this too is a ridiculous (and geographically impossible) notion.

I’d have been more impressed had DC gone back into the Batfamily archives and done something with Onyx rather than recreate The Falcon (i.e., he can fly…over Africa…all of Africa).

But if he’d been a white guy, the same people that are probably complaining about this would be even angrier.

Unrelated really, he’s in no way a replacement for Dick. He is just doing his thing in Africa with the Bat logo on.
