Another great episode! I really enjoyed the discussion of the types of Kryptonite… I was always intrigued by them since seeing a “Jeff Goldblum explains the complex part of the movie” kind of panel in an old issue of Superman (the Tales of Krypton mini-series maybe?) that had a chart of all the Kryptonites… One worked on plants only and another gave psychic powers :)
As for prior uses of Gold K, I may have my timing wrong, but wasn’t there a 1984-ish issue of Supergirl when she used it on a mob of 12 inch tall Supergirl clones? And didn’t Element Lad pull a great Gold K Ex Machina on the Superman clone in the Great Darkness Saga?
Thanks for the good memories
Adam
For whatever reason I refrained from reading my copy of T.H.U.N.D.E.R Agents until yesterday, but I loved it as well. I don’t have much familiarity with the old comics, but this run has hooked me quite well. I enjoyed how as the series began they didn’t make the reader know anything about what was going on, but are gradually revealing things that I can tell are aimed toward the older readers who know their history.
FWIW: When I was discussing the mad bomber Legends of the Dark Knight story, it wasn’t the Gothic storyline, but rather Destroyer that began in LoDK #27. Gothic had to do with a church, a serial killer, and a ghost… it was written by Grant Morrison and is pretty terrifying at moments. Gothic ran in LoDK #6 – #10.
THE MORE YOU KNOW….
Stephen, you might remember seeing El Santo in the classic Sampson vs. the Vampire Women MST3K episode (aka TV’s Frank’s last episode).
I do remember now, but at the time, I was probably “HA! Look at THAT guy!”
I grew up in Puerto Rico and my monthly comic book purchases included Superman, Batman, El Santo, and Huracan Ramirez (another wrestler just as famous as El Santo). In fact, I still have most of my copies of the Huracan Ramirez books and have been searching for a “complete” run on eBay for a while. The books are fascinating in that they are black-and-white and illustrated in a combination of live action stills and drawings (sometimes both on the same panel) which I haven’t really seen anywhere since. It makes for a bizarre pseudo-realistic art style. Off to google and see if I can find some of these online.
PS Matthew’s comments on the “unmasking” of wrestlers were right on point. I remember most storylines eventually led to a “death match” where the villain basically focused on unmasking the hero, and the issue’s cliffhanger was usually a shot of Huracan Ramirez on the ring, pinned by the villain and his cohorts, with his mask half off and the big lettering a la the Batman TV show “WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?” LOL
I haven’t had any pages fall out of the Simonson Thor omnibus, but it is a pain to read. The Marvel omnibus’s for the last few years have had pretty high quality sewn binding, which both keeps the pages in place AND makes a larger hardcover MUCH easier to read than glued binding. Significantly less gutter loss and it lays flat much easier.
The new coloring does look amazing, though. Depending on your tolerance for the issues not looking exactly like the original floppies, it’s a nice upgrade over the old trades.
Just so you know, someone from the Department of Child Services does listen to this podcast, but I work for Indiana, so Matthew’s ok… for now.
Another great episode guys. Keep up the great work.
I choose to read this comment as “Just so you know, someone *********** does listen to this podcast…”
Awww man, nobody likes to hear about my job.
