Press Release
D&D players eager to explore the evil depths of the Shadowfell and connect to its innate power will have the opportunity with the upcoming release of the D&D Player’s Options: Heroes of Shadow game supplement.
With new schools of magic, new shadow feats and new racial options, characters fighting in this sinister world are given a darker edge and the ability to fight evil in ways that only make others cringe. New builds for assassins, paladins, warlocks and the vampire class also present options to players hungry to play the archetypical antihero.
Additionally, for the first time, D&D Insider subscribers will be able to access Heroes of Shadow content on the new web-based D&D Character Builder the same day as the book release. D&D players who are then willing to take a walk on the dark side with their Heroes of Shadow character can bring them to the next season of D&D Encounters, The Dark Legacy of Evard, and experience the deadly secrets of the master of shadow magic.
Dungeons & Dragons Player’s Options: Heroes of Shadow game supplement is set to release April 19, 2011 and has an MSRP of $24.95 USD.

So is this part of Essentials or is it tied back to regular 4th Ed?
All the Essentials products have come out. As I’ve heard, the formating is going to be similar to Essentials, but it won’t be Essentials. I believe they will have actual At-Wills and Daily Powers for the new classes.
I look at it as similar to Dark Sun, Eberron, and Forgotten Realms. Muls, Artificers and Sword Mages are not ‘core’ 4E but they are options we can add.
I’m interested in seeing how Gray Guard/Black Guard will work in 4e, since Paladins no longer have to be Lawful Good in order to retain their powers.
I know a lot of people hating on Wizards of the Coast and since I do not use any of their on line stuff, I cannot speak to it. (Although, nothing they do online sounds very attractive or sounds like it’s getting any better. Anyone still happy with Insider?) I do purchase most of their 4e materials, and I think the directions they are taking with the newly formatted books and boxed sets are some really smart decisions for a brutal publishing enviroment. (I am a sucker for tokens.) Now that they have a good amount of core stuff out for 4e, I look forward to see what ideas they try to play with.
This works for me because I can’t afford books at the moment, but I have already paid my subscription fee, so I’m getting the crunchy parts complementarily.
