Variety is reporting that David Slade has been tapped to direct the new Daredevil movie for 20th Century Fox. The good news? It isn’t necessarily a reboot, but more of a continuation of the story. Back in 2008, Fox hired David Scarpa to write a new movie, but it is doubtful he will be hired to do this new installment.

This is actually good news. I haven’t seen either “Eclipse” or “30 Days of Night” (though I have read their source material) but they looked pretty good. Mainly, I’m just glad they are not doing another reboot. Even if the first Daredevil wasn’t that good, I’m glad the studio is working with what they have and moving forward instead of throwing up the dreaded “Forget it ever happened” card.
Really? Is it that dreaded?
I mean, I wasn’t THAT much of a hater of the 2003 movie–at least, I didn’t dismiss it out of turn. Nevertheless, it did fall prey to miscasting (particularly with Jennifer Garner as Elektra–a mistake compounded with the spin-off movie), a meandering plot that obviously borrowed its beats heavily from far too many comic book stories, strange visual design (with costume and set choices that distracted from the story), and a whole host of issues with over-the-top performances.
Obviously the movie didn’t do bad financially (taking in $24M more than its production budget in domestic box office alone), but I don’t think it was much of a critical success (rated 46% fresh by users on RottenTomatoes.com and a 5.4 out of 10 on IMDb).
In any case, I can’t say that I’d MIND a reboot. By the time the movie releases (assuming it actually gets into production) there will be almost a decade between it and its precursor. That’s enough time to pass for there to be a reboot in my opinion.
I’m not as concerned about the point that they pick up the movie from as I am the fact that the writing on the current comic is absolutely awful, which is bad because DD was one of my favorite titles for many, many years and through several different writers. It’s a shame that Matt Murdock’s alter ego isn’t still in NYC where be belongs.
My first reading: “Variety is reporting that David Spade has been tapped to direct the new Daredevil movie for 20th Century Fox.”
“That’s a negative, Ghost Rider!” Damn, that’s funny.
Daredevil is my wife’s favorite super hero movie, and its the only comic series I’ve managed to get her to read, based on her enjoyment of the movie. (During Bendis/Maleev run)
I look forward to seeing what they do. Daredevil was much better than a lot of people give it credit for. I like it much better than Spiderman3, Xmen3, Superman Returns, Wolverine Origins and many other hero movies.
I wish them luck, and eagerly await it.
Howard The Duck: The Movie was better than Superman Returns.
Howard The Duck was better than The Godfather. ;)
