I’m glad you are reviewing this title, but be warned: I don’t think the issues in this collection are the *best* of Grant Morrison’s Animal Man. The later issues that expose Buddy Baker to shock, horror and ultimate happiness are some of the best 4-color renditions of those emotions that have ever been done in a single title in the span of so few issues.

“The Coyote Gospel” was groundbreaking for its time, and in retrospect it is even more clever than I realized. I grokked the connection between the Chuck Jones’ entertainment value with the fact I was reading a comic, but at the time it hadn’t hit me just how seriously the Animal Man book (under Morrison) was going to treat the issue of animal rights. Somehow I missed that not only was the coyote a cartoon character being punished for our entertainment, but that it was an animal too.
