Why is the thing in Gambit’s hand still in silhouette? Is it a mutant too?

The X Men books are far too confusing.

Is this some alternate world thing like Age of Apocalypse? I’ve been away since the middle of the whole messiah mess, so maybe this is how they are now, but this so doesn’t feel like mainstream x-men.

House of M- What happens when Magneto is in charge
Age of X- what happens when Xaviers dream DOES win out….

I’ve always been a Marvel fan and X-titles specifically, granted I’m just as confused as everyone else as to what the hell’s been going on in the X-verse for the past few years. I’m just wondering if this team looks appealing to anyone?
