Touchstone Pictures is adapting William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and turning it into an animated feature starring garden gnomes.
Directed by Kelly Asbury (co-director of “Shrek 2”) and showcasing both classic and original songs by Elton John, the film features the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt as Gnomeo and Juliet, who have as many obstacles to overcome as their quasi namesakes when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors. But with plastic pink flamingos and thrilling lawnmower races in the mix, can this young couple find a happy ending?
There’s a trailer after the jump, if you dare take a look…
Well, are you lining up on opening day? February 11, 2011 is just around the corner…

That should be interesting…because last time I checked, Billy Shakespeare had both Romeo **AND** Juliet die.
Next up: Smurfus Andronicus
Then we’ll have Jesus’ life retold using Humpty Dumpty as a vehicle….
Or Othello retold using Oreo cookies… because deep down inside of all of us, is a sweet icing center that can be any color….
