I highly, highly, highly, highly recommend Naoki Ursawa’s work. It’s not stereotypical manga; and the stories are addictive. I didn’t read much of 20th Century Boys, but Pluto is VERY good. It’s a sci-fi (actually a tribute to Astro Boy) about a police detective investigating a robot serial killer. It wasn’t nominated, but Monster is excellent as well. It’s a suspense thriller about a doctor who is investigating murders he was framed for.

There you go.
Have to say, since you guys haven’t read it: Flight, the anthology, is awesome. My library has all 6 volumes, and there’s some stuff in those that blows me away, and gives me faith for non-superhero comics. Just a bunch of people doing really crazy awesome stuff. So Flight is definitely worth checking out.
Oh, and since it wasn’t really mentioned either, Beasts of Burden is a really interesting read too. It’s a bunch of (realistically drawn) dogs and cats who protect this town from supernatural threats. Worth it for the art alone.
I don’t have much to say about the main discussion, since I’m just breaking into comics and haven’t heard of most of the nominees, but I am so glad that Stephen thought to bring up the love fests that are known as the Dueling Reviews. I found it a very interesting take on something that I definitely have noticed and wondered about myself.

Love-fests?
I’m not sure what that means, actually. Stephen and I aren’t Joe and Frank Hardy over here, and we’ve had some pretty serious disagreements on books in the past…
I don’t know much about the past, but lately it does seem like there’s a whole lot of agreeing going on in the dueling reviews. Maybe it’s the flavour of the name dueling review that adds to the idea that there ‘should’ be more disagreement. (2 player online co-op reviews, perhaps?)
