If the production information I received moments ago are correct, it looks like Jay Garrick will be featured as The Flash, instead of Wally West or Barry Allen. This is according to information posted in the most recent Production Weekly, that has Geoff Johns and Dan Mazeau writing, with Greg Berianti directing. The trade has Warner Bros. nearing a greenlight for the film.
Considering Johns has a big bulge for Barry Allen, we should probably put the Jay Garrick news in the rumor column, although it wouldn’t surprise me to see a mention of the first speedster somewhere in the film.
What do you think, Spoilerites? Would you be interested in 1940s Flash story, or will Warner Bros. go with Barry Allen?

I don’t think so, unless a JSA film is planned which would be great! Jay would be great in a movie leading into a WWII movie with the rest of the JSA.
Inspired by the prospect of a successful Captain America movie and the coolness of vintage superheroes like those showcased in Watchmen?
Intimidated by having to create a cool Flash costume for the movie which works in the modern age, but wanting to do a Flash movie anyway?
Or just a case of mistaken information?
To little data to get anything meaningful out of. But speculating is very exciting.
So Stephen will you do the drudge and get us an excerpt of the production info?
This is what Production Weekly included in the production note:
“Jay Garrick was a college student in January 1940 who accidentally inhaled heavy water vapors after falling asleep in his laboratory where he had been smoking. As a result, he found that he could run at superhuman speed and had similarly fast reflexes. After a brief career as a college football star, he donned a red shirt with a lightning bolt and a stylized metal helmet with wings (based on images of the Roman god Mercury), and began to fight crime as the Flash. His first case involved battling the “Faultless Four”, a group of blackmailers. Jay kept his identity secret for years without a mask by continually vibrating his body while in public so that any photograph of his face would be blurred. He is still active as the Flash, and operates out of Keystone City. (The studio is nearing a greenlight.)”
Ladies and gentlemen the most hardworking man on the internet!
The production note could be taken word for word (Literally) from Wikipedia. Which means it could easily be a case of mistaken identities and a hastily put together info-blurb. Still though the idea of a Jay Garrick movie is very interesting.
I agree. With Johns behind the wheel, it’s gonna be Barry, but it is what they published, so I’ll tag it as rumor and let the discussion begin… :D
Oh yes Barry has the best shot. Its unfortunate Wally lost his window to be immortalized on the silver screen. But I got a thought going, wouldn’t the Flash be the perfect persona for a generation spanning movie. Jay, Barry, Wally and Bart…through time and space and all that. Kinda borrowing a bit from Watchmen and maybe if we are lucky setting up a JSA movie… All this speculation if frying my brain, bedtime!
At the Time Warner meeting the other day, the company did confirm it is making progress with The Flash and Wonder Woman movies…
I for one would love to see a movie with Jay and Barry. The one-superhero movie has been done a lot in the last decade, often very well; if this Flash movie wants to get attention, it’ll need to bring something new to the table. And what’s more central to the Flash than legacy?
The structure could be like Star Trek: Generations. Start by establishing Jay; let him strut his stuff for a bit, maybe show some WWII action. Then put him up against some new, deadlier foe and leave his fate a mystery. Skip ahead to the present day, where Barry’s reading comics based on the Flash, a figure of legend whose very existence is debated at this point. Barry gets his powers, takes on a similar identity. After a while, the threat from Jay’s story returns. Barry struggles to defeat it, and in the process he finds Jay, who’s been trapped all this time. They team up and save the day. Jay, judging his successor worthy, semi-retires to Keystone and lets Barry carry the torch.
It could work! The story’s been done before (Mask of Zorro, for instance), but not in a superhero movie. I think it would get across what the Flash is all about better than just picking one. Besides, they already made a Barry-only movie (okay, TV-movie) and it was great — now let’s do something new.
i think it might have jay as the flash in the ’40s in the prologe then move to present day where he passes the torch to barry while being a mentor to him
Considering that Alan Scott has a role in the GL movie (although it’s unclear if he will ever be shown as a GL in the movie), I would imagine that Jay would have more of a supporting role to a modern (probably Barry) Flash. As much as I like Jay Garrick, I can’t recall many solo stories of his in the past thirty years.
