News about a live action Akira adaptation have been circulating for nearly two years now, and for a while it looked like the project was completely dead. Not so, according the website Vulture, who claims it has inside information that the Hughes Brothers (Book of Eli, Menace II Society, From Hell) have been tapped to direct the Leonardo DiCaprio produced movie.
Will it happen? If film production is progressing, it will be be interesting to see how NeoTokyo will come across on the big screen, and even more interesting will be how they treat the Tetsuo action.

If this is true they better go ask James Cameron for help. The FX will be a monumental task in re-creating Neo-tokyo and the big fight at the end with Tetsuo and Kaneda. I hope they can do it though. I’d be first in line for sure.
It’d be nice if it was done with Japanese actors and taking place in Neo-Tokyo. Somehow, I do not see that happening. I was hoping this and the idea of a Robotech movie would just die already.
