Bill Murray seems to have confirmed the rumor that he will play the spectral version of Dr. Peter Venkman in the planned Ghostbusters 3 flick.

I’ll come back in Ghostbusters III only if I get to be a ghost. I said to them, ‘I’ll do it if you kill me off in the first reel.’ So now they are going to have me as a ghost in the film.

That also pretty much confirms that we’ll be seeing a whole new group of young’uns picking up the proton packs and ridding the city of specters.  Murray was able to play the undead to great effect in Zombieland, so I expect his moments on the screen will be the funniest.

Bill Murray is crazy like glue…and is known for his dry, often sarcastic comments. I see this as a way to get the camera out of his face. When I see it , Ill believe it. He is awesome, but I call b*llshit.

I hope it happens, though, it sounds really exciting.

Nooooo, perhaps, that’s so wrong, maybe, It’ll ruin the movie, possibly…

I half expected this, but so long as it’s Dane Cook free, I’ll be okay with it.

I too have to call B.S. on this rumor. You’re quoting an “Empire Online” story which is quoting yet another site, “The Mail On Sunday.” Has anybody ever heard about these sites before? I’ve been a Ghostbusters fan long enough to know when to take things seriously. I don’t know what’s worse, the original site for posting unconfirmable information, or a site like you who just reposts stories without looking into the source first.

This is actually a story that has been circulating for a while, that first appeared when Weaver was doing PR for Avatar. And considering this was an interview with Murray…

And in answer to your question, I’m very familiar with the sources this information came from, it’s not like we are reporting as fact the crap that IESB makes up on a regular basis.

After we sequel this, we should try to make a sequel to Citizen Kane. We could do it, if we hired Bill Murray to play the ghost of Peter Venkman and have him accidentally start the Spanish-American war.

I can see his interest in playing it as a ghost. It reduces both his liability for the film and the chances there will be another sequel to dilute the brand.
