A while ago Major Spoilers reported on the upcoming Joel Silver Sgt. Rock movie that would be set in the future. This seemed a bit odd, since the characters told some of their best stories while fighting the Nazis in World War II, but in an interview with the LA Times, Silver offered up a few words about a non-WWII Sgt. Rock.
“It’s a little bit in the future,” Silver said of the setting. “As a war movie, it’s not going to be ‘where it’s been,’ it’s going to be ‘where it’s going.’ We didn’t want to do Iraq, we didn’t want to do a contemporary war. We wanted to do a sort of futuristic war. It’s pretty strong. Chad St. John wrote the script and we’ve got Francis Lawrence involved in developing it with us. It’s not a ‘go’ movie yet but I’m feeling good about it.”
Films like Saving Private Ryan, and Inglorious Basterds probably weighed in the decision to move the movie to a point in time that shows us what war will be like, but I still think a goodl ol’ “killin’ Nazis” movie would be better for this property.

Why even use the property and its name if you aren’t going to USE the property.
I was going to make my usual anti-Hollywood rant but to save ya’ll time I’ll shorten it. Sgt. Rock – WWII = Blah. Guess I’ll stick with my copy of the real Easy Company in “Band of Brothers”.
I guess with the Jonah Hex movie already in production, they wanted to take the Hex concept (Jonah Hex in the future) and use Rock instead.
Were the rights to Tommy Tomorrow, Space Ranger, Space Cab, Star Hawkins, Star Rovers, Space Museum or the Atomic Knights not available?
