According to a statement made to MTV, DC Entertainment head Diane Nelson said there are no plans to make a new Superman movie.
“We actually don’t have any current plans for Superman,” said Nelson when asked if the new environment (and the recent legal decision regarding the character) made a “Superman” movie more or less likely in the near future.
The key phrase here is near future. As has been hinted by the current production schedule, Warner Bros. is looking to build its other superheroes as a lead up to a potential team-up movie. So theoretically, by 2015 (the not so near future) another Superman movie could hit screens.

Although I do like the route that Ironman and The Hulk are going with the whole Avengers backstory, but a JLA movie should be done soon. How many other members need their own movie to get it started? Maybe it should be done LOTR style, while making 2 single hero/villian movies, have a 3rd being made that brings them together in at least one movie event… with chance for a sequel. That way fans wouldn’t have to wait a decade or two before the movies get finished.
Making a couple of movies at once would allow the actors to avoid the Harry Potter aging syndrome between the first movie and the final team movie. But doing more than one movie at once takes a lot of money…and the studios don’t accept Luthor dollars.
In a perfect world, it would have gone:
2005 – Batman Begins
2006 – Superman Returns
2007 – Wonder Woman
2008 – The Dark Knight, The Flash
2009 – The Man of Steel, Green Lantern
2010 – Justice League
However, Bryan Singer fouled off SR and Joss Whedon dropped out of WW. That forced WB to totally re-load.
Joss Whedon couldn’t get DC to like his scripts no matter how many times he rewrote it. … and I don’t blame Joss for that.
Why after 70 years does Hollywood think that Superman only has one villian?
Batman has at least 2 or 3 after an equal amount of time.
Come on guys, either come up with some original villains, or use some different ones. That’s my biggest gripe about Superman Returns. (Lex Luthor… again). Superman Returns (A repeat of the Superman 1 story… again).
@ JamesDeckart:
I have mixed feelings about SUPERMAN RETURNS. It really did a nice job closing out the themes of the Donner-Reeves SUPERMAN and SUPERMAN II. As a fan of those films, it was nice to see them become a sort of ersatz Trilogy. It put that version of Superman to bed for me.
However, it did not leave me remotely curious about “what happens next?” Add to that how little DC has produced in terms of readily adaptable Superman content and it certainly could have been worse.
Oh yes, Superman Return could have been MUCH much worse. Superman fighting a giant spider, for instance. Or anything else Kevin Smith mentioned in his bit on Jon Peters.
ahhh Superman movie developmental hell…..we know ye well
